Breeding Sheep – An excellent trade with 100% clearance as the early lambing shepherds set away keen to reinvest following a successful Spring lamb season. Setting the pace were two vendors as some real quality shearlings shown by both E Grieves, Oakdene and C A & J G Skidmore, Needless Hall Farm traded well beyond £200 with tops of £265 and £260. A run of 120 terrific Mules from Dyson Farming Ltd, Nocton all sold well between £170 and £185.

Store Lambs – An absolute bonanza, the average on paper dropped £3 however in real terms trade looked even better than last year’s flyer; with expectations mixed due to the ongoing drought the vendors need not have worried as all lambs sold with ease to a packed gallery of buyers. Leading the trade was Leyburn based L D Laws of High Village Farm with a pair of strong Texel lambs at £102.50, others in the 100 club were both Wolsingham residents as G H Lister, Holebeck House and S Pybourne, 10 Causeway put in strong performances with Texel bred lambs. The annual consignment from the Richardson family of Rosedale enjoyed possibly the trade of the day with their genuine hill bred Cheviot X Texel lambs peaking £85 apiece and the firms run of 200 lambs up a staggering £13.55 on the year.

Cast Cows & OTM – Although averaging less on paper the cows were undoubtedly dearer this week with more than our fair share of plainer and older ladies on offer, we levelled up at 161ppk and £1048. The younger and better fleshed may have been in short supply but those forward enjoyed a great day, a Limousin OTM heifer from A C Walton, Yiewesly Drive topped proceedings at 230 pence per kilo, behind her a good run from D A & M A M Brown, Agglethorpe Hall took the lions share of our best prices with a 4-year-old British Blue reaching £1630, an Aberdeen Angus the same age reaching 206ppk as they deservedly turned out 5 of the top 7 prices per kilo and half of our top 10 gross valued cows. The fittest Friesians also enjoyed life this week as a youngster from G Thompson & Sons, Softley Farm sold for 198ppk and a fleshy 4-year-old from R & A Chapman, Easby Grange climbed beyond £1500. Bull trade also proved fast, the pace setters were an 8 year old Limousin from T Hughes, Sockburn Hall at 206ppk and a gigantic Aberdeen Angus from P J Glass, Duncomb Moor Farm landed top gross value of the week at £1870.

Store Cattle – A typically average July show of quality, trade arguably a touch easier however with no real runs of high quality to get the buyers teeth in to it is often difficult to ascertain, still plenty of life in the job and a ring packed with buyers. A big lad led the bull prices when a hefty 18-month-old Limousin from Mickleton based J R & G Walton & Sons sold for a brilliant £1660. Three steers sold for a joint top price of £1360 this week as D R Smith, East Roughlea Farm produced a pair of 2-year-old Hereford’s to match the price set by a Limousin from M L Tallentire, South Softley Farm, Butterknowle. Hottest of the heifers this week proved to be a classy Charolais shown by regular vendor E Parsons, Newstead Farm when she sold for £1180.
