Darlington Farmers Auction Mart held their weekly sale of Cast Cattle, Store and Breeding Stock on Monday 13th December 2021.

Forward were 291 Cattle and 1334 Sheep.

Cast Cattle
Another fair show of numbers, whilst the winter now looks to be hammering the elderly it matters little as the fine trade continues, a plainer show averaged all in 133ppk.
Three cattle sold over 200 pence this week, the leader a smart Limousin OTM from D E Stones, Scargill reached 224ppk; she was followed by a Charolais OTM from P D & J A Adamski, Fryup at 210ppk ahead of our leading older cow, full of meat the 5-year-old Limousin from D K Barker, Coatham Munderville sold for a whopping 206ppk and the days top gross value of £1590. Three other continental cows sold over £1400 with 27 in total beyond £1000. Top native cow was a superb 4-year-old Aberdeen Angus from I & S Watson of Danby which sold for 160ppk and £1276 whilst the Friesian trade peaked at 134ppk from R & A Chapman, Great Ayton and £954 from I F & C M Herring & Son, North Cowton. Top of the stock bulls this week were both OTM’s as G Archbold of Toft Hill’s Limousin reached 168ppk and W Denham, Langleydale sold a Beef Shorthorn for £1534.

Store Cattle
The store cattle trade keeps bounding along, another great day throughout; the smaller cattle certainly appeared very much dearer this week. Top price went to A C Walton, Yiewsley Drive with a superb 23 month old Limousin heifer which sold for £1480, congratulations to this good home as they produced all of our top four heifers. Leading the steers was a strong 18-month-old Limousin steer from J S Foster & Son, West End Farm, Bowes when he sold for £1380. Top of the young bulls were the superb Limousin’s we regularly see from D Dixon, Middle Heads Farm, Rowley which sold to peak of £1445. An excellent day all round with 34 cattle selling at £1100 or more, with just one store sale remaining in 2021 the trade looks set to finish this year on a high.

Store Sheep
With 27 pens (321 Lambs) selling over £100 it seems ridiculous to report a drop in price, however that was the case after last weeks trade of the century. Worry ye not, absolutely no alarm bells needed the trade stays very strong. Top price a superb Texel from J A & U M Fawcett, Marske, Richmond at £124 followed by a quartet from Adam Lowson, Hamsterley at £122 then 3 vendors all achieving £122 which included 40 strong Texel’s from W Love Ltd, Tow Law. Top priced Mule lambs this week were £112 from D Rutter, Ingleby Greenhow whilst the best of the hill breeds were Cheviots from W H Brown, Grinton at £86. The fitter end of the feeding ewes were a flyer this week, top price of £131 came from A & R Thompson, Moorsholm with a pen of 5 strong Texel’s.
