Prime Bulls (89) – The bull beef remains in extreme demand, a super sale average this week of 236 pence per kilo with 17 selling at 260ppk or more and a magnificent 7 the top side of £2000. Top price per kilo of 275 pence went to S Luck & Son of Nabb Farm, Bowes with a brilliant 658kg Limousin, another Bowes consignor A Tunstall and also R & W Todd, High Toft Hill also sold at in the 270’s. Three of the top four gross values went to the Limousin power houses from A C Simpson & Son, McNeil Farm, Witton-le-Wear; the pick of them an absolute brut reaching a very impressive £2377. Joining the £2k plus club with the aforementioned Simpson trio was another from the Nabb Farm pen plus one from J E Jordon & Son, Longhirst and a perfectly fed pair from regular sellers D Richardson & Co, Bracken House, Melsonby. Leading the native breeds this week was a top class Beef Shorthorn from J A & M Boyes, Cleatlam at 235ppk and £1750 whilst a somewhat mixed show of Holstein Friesians peaked at 219 pence per kilo from J & J H Musgrave, Pawton Hill, Elwick and a wonderful £1446 from the top feeding of R Hall & Son, Kilton Hall. Clean Cattle (153) – An increased show and trade absolutely fabulous for the thick meat, the heifers averaged a scrumptious 273ppk with the steers 260ppk, no doubt at all that a patient finish is required, in simple terms the coin is in the loin! Ladies first, an impressive 14 heifers in the 300’s with no less than 30 others selling 290-299ppk. On somewhat of a role at the moment is Neil White of Barf House, Marrick and again today he was the one to catch as his super homebred Limousin heifer led the charge at 313 pence per kilo. Some familiar faces in the chasing pack as the Hirst’s of Neasham, Marks of Bishopton and Hodgson’s of Summerhouse all pressed on beyond 300 pence but none could quite catch the Marrick maestro. Not so very long ago a heifer over £1600 was a very rare sight, today the prime ring churned out 45 above £1600, of these 16 were in the £1700’s, three in the £1800’s and the delightful leader checked in at £1936; a terrific 677kg Limousin from Staindrop consignors F W Hodgson & Son, Burton House. The steer race was a sprint finish, wearing the yellow jersey at 289 pence per kilo were W Swinbank & Sons, Greystones, Caldwell however the chasing peloton included 6 more over 280 pence as the Marks of Bishopton, Askwiths of Crook; Moss of Ompton and Lovegreen’s, Catterick all enjoyed a fine trade. The gross valued steers again belonged to the insanely consistent Barker Farming Partnership, Scorton as they secured the three top gross values with a peak of £2044, only the Calender’s of Whinney Hill prevented total Barker domination as they also snook in to the £2k plus club.

Prime Lambs (2102) – Wider tops make better chops, just as we witnessed with the cattle the coin is in the loin. The weekly tally of sheep sold today took us over 5000 in the week however it only needed one from budding young farmers ‘The Davies Sisters’ of Houghton Grange to lead the pence per kilo race as their superb 40kg Beltex lamb sold for 300 pence and £120, plenty of the smarter end today sold 260 to 290ppk as a similar show of quality rose slightly on the week to level at 232 pence per kilo. Top price per head went to M & A Gaskin of Holdsworth Farm as a pair of heavyweight Beltex crossed lambs sold for £149 per head, 43 from this good home averaged over £131. An impressive 36 pens of lambs today sold over £120 lifting the average per head to a pleasing £102.93, phenomenal for September.

Cast Ewes (448) – A plainer show in general however more life in proceedings, top of the trade were a pair of fantastic pure Texel ewes from P Turnbull, West House Farm, Kildale at £140; top of the tups and £120 was then achieved just moments later by a superb Texel from A Pennell, Home Farm, Catterick. Mule ewes today regularly in the £85-£95 bracket with Swaledale’s often able to top £60 providing they carry flesh.

Prime Pigs (8) – Apparently the worst apple harvest since…….. the last bad apple harvest is upon us, despite the doom mongering surrounding the supply of apple sauce the pigs today remain a decent enough trade, thank goodness for that.
