Cast Cattle – The cow trade rolls along very nicely indeed, a lighter show of numbers this and without a superstar top ten like last week still averaged a very healthy 191ppk and £1275. Top per kilo at an impressive 284 pence was a brilliant 4-year-old British Blue from Northfield Farms, Bowes; a smart Limousin from the same neck of the woods and J B Luck & Son proved herself as best of the rest at 266ppk. Top gross valued cow came from the consistent A C Simpson & Son, Witton-le-Wear with an excellent 813kg Limousin reaching £2016. Beef Shorthorn’s from the Mayfield herd, Wolsingham led the native breeds topping at 238ppk and £1551 whilst the best milk cow this week was a Holstein Friesian from Little Newsham Farms at 190ppk and £1227. Three stock bulls to choose from, top of the shop was a tidy 7-year-old Limousin from L Booton, Thornton Steward selling for 208ppk and £2098.

Breeding Cattle – A scattering of cows and calves were again in demand, top of the sale came from regular vendors W B Rutter & Sons, Scargill with a smart British Blue heifer suckling a shapely young Limousin crossed heifer calf and selling for £2420.

Store Cattle – The store cattle trade is doing what it so often does in April and gaining momentum by the week, excellent prices throughout this week as all classes improve on what previously looked a straight shot. Beginning with the bulls and a bumper show largely thanks to sixty down from Aberdeenshire and the prolific Stephen Allardyce, East Town, Tarland; the trade looked excellent and topped at £1610 for a lovely Simmental yearling from the Aberdonian, the same good home also sold Aberdeen Angus bulls to £1575 and further Simmentals to £1580 and £1540 with a fine run of Limousin’s from J C Thwaite & Son, Lartington placed them as the second most successful vendor sharing half of the top ten spots. Top of the store cattle this week at £1670 was an impressive Limousin heifer from N Wilson, Hill House Farm; other leading females on the day were a 13-month-old Aberdeen Angus from A & A G Moralee, Lowfield Farm and also a Limousin from K B & S Roche, Foulsyke Farm both at £1560. The steer top ten today remarkably contained nine indigenous breeds, the most creative of the natives were a pair from Mayfield Beef Shorthorn’s at £1580.

Store Sheep- The Store Hogg trade is yet again on fire. Top price of the day goes to C Longstaff, St James Gardens, with a run of superb Suffolk Gimmer Hoggs. Following behind was a fantastic Continental hogg from JE Holliday & Son, making a great £182. £170 for a terrific Texel hogg followed by P&J Martin, Manor Farm Bungalow, who also had a Mule reach a top price of £138. Also topping at £170 today was J Wood, Manor House Farm Bungalow, with a super Suffolk Hogg. Blackfaced topped at £131 from RI Jones, Biggin House Farm whilst Swales topped at £124 from Northfield Farms, South Thornberry.

Ewes & Lambs- A Terrific show of Ewes and lambs today saw an impressive trade. Top price of the day goes to W Wearmouth & Son, Rose Hill Farm, with two tremendous texel ewes and twin lambs reaching £325. Closely following was N Medd & Son, with a terrific run of strong mules and twin lambs at foot, reaching a top price of £318. Third in the leaderboard for today is S Fenwick, Southwood Farm, with 5 continental ewes and twin lambs making a great £315.
