Darlington Farmers Auction Mart held their monthly sale of rearing calves in conjunction with their weekly sale of cast cattle, store and breeding stock. Forward were 334 cattle, 369 sheep and 12 pigs.

Another fantastic calf sale today, with plenty of quality on offer with a great trade to match.
Top priced Bull of the day goes to Wilkinson & Son, Carrsides, with a brilliant British Blue making £570, with all the bull calves from this good home £520 and above. Following closely in second was J Wood, Manor House Farm with a cracking Aberdeen Angus Bull at £560. Top priced Friesian of the day went to JB&LM Knight, Middle Holling Carr, making £510. Whilst Inra 95 Bulls topped at £420 from WL Kitching, Summerfield Farm.
Top priced heifesr of the day go to WL Kitching, Summerfield Farm, with a fantastic pair of Inra 95 which made a great £605 and £600. Following within the heifer section was Wilkinson & Son, Carrsides, making £555 with a British Blue. Aberdeen Angus Heifers topped at £460 from JB&LM Knight, Middle Holling Carr.

Cast Cattle – A tale of two halves again, some stunning beef bred cows were duly joined what turned out to be a higher than usual percentage of parlour maids, a sharper trade in reality saw however the averages less on paper at 172ppk and £1096 per head. Top price per kilo was a stunning British Blue OTM heifer from W A Dinsdale & Son, Harkerside Place when she sold for 288 pence, the same good home followed at 260ppk with a four-year-old ahead of a wonderful ten-year-old Limousin cow from W I Suddes & Son, South Farm, Cornsay at 238ppk. Top of the gross values was also a ten-year-old Limousin, an absolute tank of a cow from J E Jordon & Son, Longhirst, Morpeth she tipped the scales to 1030kg and sold for an impressive £2224 (216 pence). Between the Jordon’s, Suddes and Dinsdale’s the tremendous top eight today averaged 235ppk and £1864. Native breeds were topped by Aberdeen Angus as Angram Livestock Ltd of Ripon sold a ten-year-old at 200ppk and T W & C Emerson, Hollinside a thirteen-year-old at £1601. No less than thirty-four of this week’s show were pure bred dairy cows; Dairy Shorthorn’s from the Beckwith’s of Brough Castle led the gross values at £1387 whilst top per kilo was shared at 198 pence between Holstein’s from A R & C Booth, Bolton-on-Swale and R & A Chapman, Easby Grange.

Store Cattle – Dearer on the week by some margin as the recent super spurt the grass growers have enjoyed is transferring directly in to the store ring. A trio of 12-month-old British Blonde’s led the young bull trade from J J Horn, Bushy Park, Marske selling twice at £1490 and topping at £1585, eight bulls from three other vendors also sold over £1400. A pair of strong Hereford steers from regular selling G W & M Singleton & Sons, Farlington Grange led the store trade selling at £1480, following at £1460 was a British Blue steer from G T & M A Wearmouth, Stainmore and also at that price were a super pair of dairy bred British Blue heifers from Wilkinson & Son, Carrsides, Rushford.

Store Sheep – The store hoggs are almost over and out, if today was the last shot, then it went out with quite some bang as Peter Tindale of Preston Tilery sold two delightful Dutch Spotted gimmer hoggs at a massive £282 apiece. Feeding ewes a nice trade with Suffolk’s to £148, Texel’s to £146 and Mules to £117.

Breeding Sheep – Dearer again, as with the store cattle nothing does for trade quite what an abundance of the magic green stuff can do. Top of the day were excellent Texel hoggs and lambs from F Watson, Beacon Hill at £302, close behind at £300 was a Mule ewe with strong Suffolk twins from J W & J Collin, Intake Farm at £300 with Texel ewes and twins from both B R Lawson, Buddle House and R G & G Rutter, High House in close attendance in the high £290’s. Blue texel ewes with pure bred single tup lambs from M Lindlay, Willowdene sold at £280 and £255 as once again the ewe and lamb trade looked buoyant throughout.
