Cast Cattle – A largely plain show mattered little to a full complement of buyers as trade remained superb to see them all in average 184ppk and £1253 with no less than twenty fresh from the parlour included in those figures. The top three per kilo were all fantastic Limousin’s from A C Simpson & Son, McNeil Farm with a best of 270 pence for a 41-month-old followed at 262ppk and 254 ppk by a pair of 5-year-olds. Despite two of the McNeil three selling over £2000 they were outdone in the gross value race by a superb Parthenais cow from M Barker Farms, Ellerton weighing 900kg and selling at 240ppk, an impressive £2160. Native breed cows were led by an Aberdeen Angus from G & J H Tomlinson, Sunniside Farm when selling at 206ppk and £1755 whilst the host of dairy cows were topped by a Swedish Red & White from A Willey, Broomfield Farm at 212ppk and £1600; Montbeliarde cows sold to 200ppk and £1504 from H M Dent, East Farm whilst Holstein’s topped at 206ppk from the Willey’s of Broomfield once again or £1496 from WE & CA Anderson, Layton Fields. Store Cattle – The weekly sale of store cattle again did not disappoint sellers at Darlington; with a damp day forecast the ringside was brim full of buyers from start to finish. The sale got off to a flyer with J Dent, East Farm selling bulls to £1600. This continued throughout with a leading price of £1830 for a pen of four wonderful Charolais bullocks from Messrs B & L Robson, Gawen House. Store Sheep – Healthy numbers of lambs in attendance this week and with that came an extra buyer or two keeping trade at the wonderful levels which we are now accustomed to. The whole sale averaged £94 today with plenty of Mule and hill bred lambs now coming forward prices would be every bit as good throughout. Top of the pops were half a dozen humongous North of England Mule lambs from T E Dobson, Unthank Farm, Stanhope; with their sisters enjoying a sale topping average last week the brothers didn’t disappoint today at £130 and the run of fifty-two averaging £116.73. Stacks of the stronger lambs continue to sell beyond £115 whilst £100 plus is very achievable for the mid-term keepers and £85 to £100 the going rate for the longer-term projects. Feeding ewes continue to get a good kick of the ball, tops this week came from Charles Eden Smith with sixteen strong Texel’s out of Cheviot Mule’s at £150. One hundred Mule ewes averaged £75 and topped at £116 whilst eighty-one Swaledale’s averaged £36 and topped at £52.
