Prime Bulls (98) Almost 100 bulls forward, trade was as sharp as ever, although quality throughout was not of the usual standard with more Dairy Bred sorts forward, resulting in an average of 278ppk & £1905. A top price of 330ppk & £2131 for a striking Limousin sold by Northumberland based and regulars with the top spot – A&D Proctor, Swarland Old Hall, was purchased by Worsley Wholesale Meats. The lead Grossing Bull a Limousin saw a welcome return to JA&M Boyes Ltd, Strathmore House, with the hammer coming down at 319ppk & £2634 also to John Worsley. The top Friesian bull sold for 244ppk & £1627 from MA&PD Foster, Smith House Farm to JA Jewitt Ltd, Spennymoor while GW Dobson & Son, Wood Close sold the lead grossing Friesian at £1667 to Bowland Foods. The top Native Bred Bull ppk was an Angus also sold by MA&PD Foster, Smithy House Farm for 264ppk & £1776 to Bowland Foods. The Lead grossing native, a pure Shorthorn sold by Gerard Te- Lintelo, Mayfield Beef Shorthorns, sold for £2095 to JA Jewitt Ltd.

Cast Cows – There was 2 Pure Limousin Cows forward – W&M Knaggs & Son, East Newbiggin’s sold for 231ppk & £1589 and M&G Chantrell Ltd’s sold for 220ppk & £1548 both purchased by Hartshead Meats.

Clean Cattle (140) With demand for clean cattle pre-sale obvious, DFAM had forward a terrific entry of 140 head. Trade was very strong for all types but especially for handy weighted heifers selling to 384ppk returning an average of 334ppk. A quartet of wonderfully finished continental Heifers from NE Dyson, Gebdykes Farm were the cream of the crop as far as the gross values are concerned reaching a sensational £2351.There was a noticeable increase in demand for steers throughout the sale. Today’s offering included a few Native and Dairy bred boys alongside a multitude of lighter weighted continental’s from as far South as Leicester courtesy of MG Chantrell Ltd to local producers Barker Farming Partnership Ltd, Scorton who went forward to sell the top price ppk & lead grossing steer at 346ppk & £1980. The overall average of 308ppk would be a healthy improvement on the week.

Today’s lamb trade at Darlington averaged an excellent SQQ of 299ppk, making todays sale 32ppk dearer than this week last year. With the trade beaming and meated lambs wanted, top price of the day goes to regular customer W.K M.M Lamb of Doe Park, with a tremendous Beltex lamb, selling for £210 or 446ppk, followed by £200 from the same vendor, both purchased by regular buyer, Mr Alam of Lancashire Direct Halal Meat. Tremendous Texel lambs from J&A Layfield, New Row Farm, sold regularly from £160 to a top price of £176. T Lawson follows with a Texel lamb making £166 and a Charollais making £164. Suffolks topped at £155 from J Thompson, 12 Corn Close. Over all a superb days trading here at Darlington, highlighting that plenty of meat and weight is exactly what attracts these premium prices.

The recent rise in Cast Ewes witnessed in Darlington continues, with well fleshed Ewes remaining a flying trade. Top Price of the day goes to W Hanson of Highcliffe Farm, with a shapely Texel ewe selling for £272. Closely following was a Continental Tup from G Horner, Howe Wath Farm, making £210. Next in line was JJ Horn, Bushy Park, with another Texel Ewe making £196. Strong Texel Ewes regularly trading between £160 and £190. Mule ewes selling between £116 and £126 and Suffolk ewes trading between £140 and £150. A great day all round.
