Cast Cattle (44) A lighter show of cast cattle on the week, amongst these only a handful of dairy bred girls. Trade would be just as buoyant, returning a whole market average of 190ppk & £1228 per head. The top price continental cow – selling for 262ppk was a Limousin from The Gallon Family, High Crows House which grossed £1606 with the lead grossing continental cow, also a Limousin weighing 924kg sold by DK Barker, Little Ketton Farm for 200ppk totalling £1848. Top of the native section was a 29mth pure Hereford from W&R Kemp & Son, Wigdon Walls selling for 228ppk & £1552 and Holstein Friesian’s from AR&C Booth, Village Farm sold for 153ppk & £1126 making them top of the dairy section. Of the 3 Stock Bulls forward, the top slot ppk went to AJ Marr & Son, Old Ravensworth Farm whose Limousin sold for 192ppk & £1916, while fellow Tyneside farmers AJ Gibson Farming, Cut Thorn Farm was in front for the top grossing value with a 1161kg Shorthorn selling for £2147.

Store Cattle – A plainer show of cattle forward – trade however was as dear as ever with stronger cattle being the easiest to sell. 8 steers from RJ Bradshaw, Hawthorne Farm Ellerby – all dairy bred sold to an average of £1455, with a Limousin steer realising the top store price of the day selling for £1535. DR Smith, East Roughlea bagged top spot with the heifers, selling to £1435. Grix of Hill Head Farm sold the best of the bulls on the day – 3 Blode D’ Aquitaine for £1350 each followed by T Ducker, Coppice House, Rivelin with 2 Limousins which sold for £1335 & £900. Just the 2 Hereford Cows & Calves forward, courtesy of B Hutchinson, Field House, Greatham each selling to £1450

With the store lamb trade still going strong, the sale averaged £100 across the board, with a mix of quality throughout. Leading price of the day goes to B Lowson, Podge Hole Farm, with two cracking Texel lambs at £175 and another one at £155, closely followed by PJ Anderson & Son, Lydgate, with four Texel lambs making £152. Continental Lambs from N Gill, Moorey Lea, made a fantastic price of £152, with another pen of theirs following at £128. TE Dobson, Unthank Farm, had sixty-four terrific mules at £121.50, followed by GH&RG Stobbs, High Wiserley, with a pen of six mules at £95. In the lead of the Suffolk section was GH&RG Stobbs, making £112, closely followed by RA Patterson & Son, with a pen full, making £111.

Breeding sheep prices are still very good for the time of year, and today a good show of quality was forward. Top price Shearlings of the day went to SG Harrison & Son, Rectory Farm, with some strong continental shearlings making £230, following closely was AE&FS Glaves, Brompton, with some super Suffolk x shearlings reaching £225. CM&TF Seymour, Dromonby Farm, had Texel Shearlings to £215, with a second pen making £200. G Gall, Gillahill Farm, showed a strong packet of Continental sired, 3 crop Ewes, which topped at £212.

Feeding Ewes slightly back however still a good trade. Starting off with J&JA Wilkinson, Walesmoor Farm, with a fantastic Texel ewe, making £150. Following within the Texel section, was J Kelly, Eastfield Farm, with another strong ewe making £142. Mules topped at £120 from Christopher Readshaw and Continental Ewes topped at £108 from JV Hodgson & Son, Piercebridge Farm. Swale Ewes topped at a terrific £85 from JJM Lonsdale, Smailes Burn.
