Cast Cattle – Cows every bit as dear as witnessed lately, a very ordinary bottom end this week still saw the market average 174ppk and £1139 which is a remarkable return given the increased percentage of leaner and older cows included. Youth was on the side of our topper per kilo, a smart 33-month-old Limousin from F Hickson & Son, Homilton Farm led the way when she sold for 276 pence; Aberdeen Angus claimed the next four top spots with OTM’s to 244 and 240ppk and twice well fleshed 10-year-old cows reached 230ppk. Top gross value went to one of the aforementioned terrific Angus cows as a thumping 874kg sort from G & J H Tomlinson & Son, Sunniside Farm sold for an impressive £2010. Friesian trade this week belonged to a super heifer from Stainton Hill Farms, Streatlam when she sold for 222ppk and £1420 whilst a cracking trio of stock bulls all sold over 200ppk and £2000 to tops of 226ppk from R Valks, Field House Farm and £2206 from Taylor Bros, Belle Isle.

Store Cattle – An absolutely bouncing bull trade, in particular the further forward feeding bulls would sell to levels as high as anything ever witnessed. Top of the trade at £1865 was a super 30-month-old Limousin from J & F Hartley & Sons, Low Shipley Farm, the same good home sold again at £1695 and in doing so sandwiched a stunning 10-month-old British Blue from E Wilson, White Hills which realised a wonderful £1725. Short keep store cattle continue at full speed with an abundance of buyers creating great demand; cattle in from the grass with their summer bloom still about them are also in big tune, arguably the more weathered looking sorts were perhaps down a smidgen this week following last weeks flyer. Top of the steers at an impressive £1835 was a strong 18-month-old Aberdeen Angus from S Richardson, High Park Wall, Marwood as the short keep bullocks are very regularly north of £1500. Top heifer on the day was a smart 19-month-old Limousin from Hughes Bros Farms Ltd, Sockburn Hall when she sold for £1625, F Hickson & Sons of Homilton Farm and W A Wardman, Thrushwood Farm both followed with 16-month-old Limousin’s in the mid £1500’s. An excellent run of store cattle made the cross Pennine journey worthwhile for D A Teasdale, Doddick Farm, Keswick as the fifty-eight saw steers to £1555 and heifers to £1485 with their forty-four steers and heifers averaging a pleasing £955 apiece. Earlier in the day a handful of breeding cattle sold well to top at £1920 for a 5-year-old Hereford cow with calf at foot from I Newton & Son, Gibbet Hill.

Store Sheep – The scintillating store trade keeps rolling along nicely, no question the quality is now sliding and still the average sits very close to three figures. Topping the day at £148 were a strong pair of Texel’s from P J Anderson, Lydgate Avenue, Wolsingham closely followed by two dozen tremendous Suffolk’s from A & B Herworth, Crake Scar Farm at £147. The Mule lambs didn’t disappoint to average £84 with a top of £98 from J J M Lonsdale, Smailes Burn whilst out and out hill lambs peaked at £90 for the Cheviots of R L Dent, Mount Pleasant Farm, Brough. An increased offering of feeding ewes was keenly contested topping at £139 for a dozen Texel’s from W B Mitchell & Sons, Howlett Hall whilst some 270 Mule’s descended on DfAM selling thrice to £108 and with a very lean bottom end still the breed averaged £70.
