Store Cattle – The weekly sale once again produced nice numbers and a sharp trade for all classes; the short keep types are in brilliant form as are the smarter suckled calves. Following on from their cow ring success the top call of the day went to an excellent 20-month-old Limousin steer from R C Bainbridge, Folly House when the hammer fell at £1670; the super sorts from Folly House left with the day’s top pen average of £1518. Top of the heifer prices was a cracking 18-month-old Limousin from W A Wardman Ltd, Thrushwood Farm when she sold for £1650; behind her an excellent Limousin from D Lumley, Cherry Tree followed closely at £1640 as their quartet of 11-to-17-month-old heifers average £1492. F Ward of Rogerley Hall led the trade for yearlings with terrific heifers selling at £1610 whilst a stunning consignment of Spring born calves from L Booton, Manor Farm set the bar high for next week’s great annual sale goers when topping at £1240 and averaging £1180. Top of the bulls today was a strong Aberdeen Angus from S Waggott, Hollin Hall Farm at £1610, he was followed by 6-7-month-old Charolais bulls from Allison Devereux Farms, Low Harperley at £1230.

Store Lambs – The trade motors on in good form and with that and the incoming winter drags the numbers forward. A host of hill gotten lambs attended today as did what seemed like a yard full of tup lambs, the average dropped off the back of this but in reality, trade would be very, very similar. Not as many Mule lambs as in recent weeks averaged a respectable £81 whilst the hill lambs saw Herdwicks sell to £48 and some 260 long keep Swaledale’s averaged £38 and sold to a top of £44.
