Cast Cows – A rather mixed show of Cows forward, returning an average of 266ppk &   £1654. AC Simpson & Son, McNeil Farm were streets ahead for the top slot, with one of his trio of girls just over a tonne in weight selling for a spectacular 368ppk and grossing at an unbelievable £3797 resulting in an incredible average of 358ppk & £3148 for the three. Thompsons of Softley Farm sold the top grossing Dairy Cow, a Friesian at 248ppk & £1850, whilst JR&JA Wharton, Segbushwell claimed the top slot for ppk, also with a Friesian, selling for 288ppk & £1676. The top price ppk Native was an Angus, sold by JV Hodgson & Son, Piercebridge Farm selling for 346ppk & £1892. CM Smith, Park House Farm sold the lead grossing Native, also an Angus for 242ppk & £2011. Only 3 Cast Bulls forward for sale, the pick of the bunch was a Limousin weighing in at 1105kg, selling for 306ppk & £3381 sold by M Shepherd, Fulthorpe Farm.

Today’s sale started with the genuine herd reduction of 12 Limousin Cows & Calves, forward by David & Joan Gallon, High Crows Farm – with ages ranging from 43 months to 14 years, all outfits were complete with outstanding stirks on them, and went on to sell to a top price of £4000 for a Heifer with a Heifer calf at foot, which was purchased by the Burns Brothers, Stamfordham. The overall average totalled a very pleasing £1604 per life. 2 Angus Cows & Calves sold to £2300 courtesy of B&L Robson, Gawen House.
Store Cattle – Trade very similar to last weeks, with no sign as yet of prices easing – A very mixed show of cattle forward, to a packed ring side of buyers.The top priced steer came from a superb run of 40 Limousin and British Blue cattle, sold by Cumbrian farmers JA&D Forster, Gillalees Farm, Brampton, the pair of British Blue’s went under the hammer for £2260, all told the consignment accomplished an overall average of £1860. Ian Cairns of Pesspool Hall sold the top priced store Heifer, an Angus for £2330, his pen of 5 cattle sold to a marvellous £2054. Unusually there was just the one pen of Store Bulls forward, 3 Continentals and one Angus courtesy of JK Gregory, Porch House Farm, they sold to a maximum of £1500, average £1455.

Rearing calves-

A mixed show of ages and breeds saw the rearing calves dearer and averaging £463. Top price of the day goes to a fantastic Inra95 heifer from Baysleap Dairy Farm Ltd making £770, with this home also having top priced Inra95 bulls to £710. British Blue heifers topped at £705 from JR&JA Wharton of Segbushwell, whilst British Blue bulls from H Gibb & Son, Eachwick Redhouse, reached £610. A Wilson & J Lawrence of Cowclose Farm, reached heights of £740 with Angus Bulls, whilst JL Miles & Sons of Little bridge Farm topped with Angus Heifers at £410. A terrific run of 4-week-old Simmental bulls topped at £530 from JE&MP Else, Grange Farm, and Charollais bulls reached £680 from Baysleap Dairy Farm Ltd. Herefords from A Wilson & J Lawrence topped at £700, whilst the same home topped the Friesian bulls at £480.

Store lambs this week continue with the exceptional trade, with top price being £170 with a Beltex lamb from MR Cass, Beacon Farm. Texel lambs topped at £156 from F Watson, Beacon Hill, whilst Continental breeds reached £137 from RE Coatsworth, Wearview Farm. Suffolk lambs from F&A Gilchrist, Crime Rigg Farm, made £112.50 and Mule lambs from TH&M Noble, Pond Farm, reached £100.

A plain show of feeding ewes extremely dear, with Texels to £176 from J Swale & MJ Milner, Reg Cap Farm, whilst continental bred ewes reached £172 from CA&J Kipling, Stone Close, with the same home topping the mules at £150. Swaledale ewes to £104 from JD Heavisides, The Bungalow and Black Faced ewes from F Dixon & Sons, Blindburn, to £102.
