Darlington Farmers Auction Mart held their weekly sale of Cast Cattle, Store and breeding stock and also their fortnightly sale of Calves on Monday 16th December 2024. Forward were 319 Cattle, 1254 Sheep.

The final curtain on DfAM’s Monday store and feeding sales with what can be only described as plenty of festive spirit around the rings with both old and new faces returning both among the vendors and buyers to round off a super year.

 

Cast cows kicking the day off in fine form with a display even the royal variety show would be pleased with the 130 head offering a sale average of 190p/kg and £1236, with the pick of the day going to the continental bred animal with the Blondes taking the top in the lump with P Weightman & Son ringing the bell at £2118.64, narrowly missing out on doing the double at 284p/kg. The top spot in the pence per kilo goes to the Limousins with C & N Waters topping the day at 290p/kg. It must be said that although there were plenty of suckler bred cows on offer there was the usual show of dairy bred cows mixed amongst the days trading with the Friesian cows topping at 234p/kg and £1753 for Messrs Fisher. Plenty more of the dairy bred cows regularly trading between the 150-170/180p/kg depending on fleshing. Store cattle seeing a handier offering forward however still plenty of power and shape mixed amongst the cattle today as well as plenty of long-term stores mixed amongst them. Top of the day and taking all the podium places were D W Dresser with a super run of cattle to top at £2110 twice with others to £2070 and £1990 for Limousin steers. Heifers lead the day for S Beeforth at £1860 while G W & L Marsay followed closely behind at £1800. Pick the bulls came from S Jackson at £1960 for an Aberdeen Angus sired bull with another from the same home to £1850. Plenty of forward short keep cattle on offer trading between the £1500-£1800 bracket the younger end of the cattle still well in demand with them trading between the £1000-£1300 depending on the goods. Rearing Calves-

Today’s sale saw rearing calves achieve an impressive average of £360, with calves ranging from ages 2 weeks to 7 weeks old. With today’s show of calves younger and a lighter show on offer, a fantastic trade was had all round. Top price of the day went to H Gibb & Son, Eachwick Red House, with a tremendous British Blue Bull Calf, aged 4 weeks old, making £440, this good home also had Blue Calves priced between £400-£430. Following in the Bull section was Kitchings of Summerfield, with a Fantastic Inra95 Bull Calf, aged 20 days old, reaching £420. Angus Bulls topped at £360 from H Gibb & Son, followed by Kitchings of Summerfield at £320. Top Priced Heifer went to Kitchings of Summerfield with an impressive Inra95, making £410. Whilst Angus Heifers from H Gibb & Son, Eachwick Red House, made £310. A reminder that the next calf sale will now be on Monday 13th January.

The Polar Express of sheep trades continues to rumble on forward towards the big day with no let up in the numbers forward or the trade for all grades of sheep placed in front of the buyers. Everyone must have been on the nice list as it was only presents in the sleigh for everyone today with a lamb trade that all in averaged £109.80 which is some £3-£4 a head dearer on the week. It must be said the averages include the good the bad and the ugly, with everything from the very best bonny Beltexs right through to the long term keep lambs that may see easter. Plenty of buyers around the ring for all goods saw a grand days trading. Kicking the final store sale of 2024 off were the feeding ewes which topped with tups at £186 for H Foster and Ewes at £168 for N A Thompson. The best of the best Beltex store lambs saw a roaring trade and topping for J Lovegreen with a pen of £153 and others to £144, £141 and £138. Pen after pen of the shorter keep store lambs regularly £130+. Plenty of grazing and mid term lambs regularly trading between the £110-£125 mark depending on the breeding with the longer term projects selling between £70-£110, again depending how they’re bred.
