When you take into account the time of year, and the fact that it’s Yorkshire Show week – there was a tremendous show of cattle forward, both in quality and quantity. A ring full of eager buyers very keenly bidding for all types resulted in trade being even dearer on the week. With cattle travelling from as far North as Rochester to the extreme South of Essex all vendors would leave the auction mart with a smile on their faces and a much healthier bank balance. Leading the charge was a consignment of 25 Luing x Steers & Heifers from WO Grix & Partners, Hillhead Farm, Morpeth selling to £2280 average £2042. Close behind were County Durham farmers N&AD Brass & Son, Ox Close Farm who sold 14 Angus & British Blue Heifers & Steers to £2280, average £1952. The well-travelled Short Horn Steers sold by Mill Pond Farm Essex averaged £1922, however it was left to local farmers DR Smith, East Roughlea, Ferryhill to achieve top spot with a Limousin Steer selling for £2400. KM Norman Farms, Windy Hill achieved the leading price for Heifers at £2260 with an Angus – part of a quality consignment of 19 mixed cattle selling for a healthy £1822 average. Store Bulls were just as sought after as the cattle, and J&EM Lawson, Harpington Hill went on to sell 4 Limousin & Shorthorns to £2460 average £2285. P Donnelly, Bank Flow Farm was close behind with 2 British Blues at £2420 & £2220. With 9 Cows & Calves forward, Jo Martin, Manor Farm sold 3 outfits ranging from Heifers & Calves (£2480) to 9-year-old Cows & Calves (£2300) and L&M Evans, Denholme wasn’t far behind in the money with a British Blue Heifer & Calf selling to £2320. Just 2 stirks forward, courtesy of L Booton, Manor Farm going under the hammer at £1180 & £1040 respectively.
