Cast Cattle – A tidy offering this week with some flesh about, trade improving again to see them average 192ppk and an impressive £1316 per head. Top per kilo this week at 264 pence was an excellent Limousin OTM heifer from R Mortimer, New House Farm, Glaisdale; a super seven other OTM’s followed between 234ppk and 256ppk. Top older cow per kilo was a tremendous Limousin from E R & G I Younger, High Trewhitt Farm which sold for 228 pence. Top gross valued female this week came from T N Callender, Ox Eye Farm, Whinney Hill with a superb 783kg 42-month-old Limousin selling for £1957; behind the leader some excellent Aberdeen Angus from G H Tomlinson & Son, Sunniside Farm impressed reaching £1739 and £1766 ahead of a Hereford at £1730; one further Limousin and two Charolais also over £1700. Of the dairy breeds it was a 32-month-old Friesian young bull from D R Smith, East Roughlea at the top reaching 222ppk and £1263 whilst the beef bulls were topped at 188ppk and £2098 for a 5-year-old Stabiliser from Skelton Farming Ltd, Stanghow.

Store & Breeding Cattle – A typically light show of numbers for the time of year, trade remains excellent with all classes in demand. Starting the day of in fine form was a tidy 7-yerar-old British Blue cow with Limousin calf at foot from R B Watson, Strand Foot, Bowes selling for £2000, her 9-year-old compatriot then sold for £1800. A dairy dominated show of young bulls sold to a lively ringside of buyers, top of the pile came two excellent 14-month-old Stabiliser bulls from E R & G I Younger, High Trewhitt Farm, Thropton at £1495, following closest were pure Limousin’s from O J Kendall, Woodyard, Reeth selling a 13-month-old at £1410 and an 11-month-old at £1390. The top three prices in the steers this week proved that age is but a number as they were each either 29 or 30 months; pick of the pack at £1580 was a fleshy Hereford from G W & M Singleton & Sons, Farlington Grange with Limousin’s from W Walker & Sons, High Copelaw just £10 adrift in second place. Heifer trade also peaked at £1580, the responsible party being R E Dickson, Stubdale Farm, Loftus with an excellent 26-month-old Aberdeen Angus.
