Cast Cattle – The beef pot continues to bubble nicely as we head towards the festive period, a sale average of 135ppk throughout, particularly the younger and those carrying flesh were in high demand. Making her way to the top of our leader board was a sensational 38 month old Limousin from J L Marks, Gilly Flatts, Bishopton which sold for an outstanding 214 pence per kilo and £1549; the run from Gilly Flatts also secured the top priced older cow as an 8 year old impressed selling for 186ppk and £1528. Store Cattle – Beginning with the bulls and the particular power of the Charolais breed which scooped the top 3 places, twice J Jimminson of East Oakley House sold 22 month olds beyond £1400 however the star turn came from G Scott of Low Houses, Newbiggin with their exceptional 2 year old which sold for a massive £1600. A truly eclectic mix of store cattle met with the continued enthusiasm we have seen of late, all shapes and sizes sold well on the day. Taking the honours, not for the first time, were some superb 20 month old Limousin steers from J H Johnson, White Lea Farm, Roddymoor when they peaked at £1320. Close behind in the steer race and preventing total White Lea domination was a strong British Blonde from G Beadle, Primrose Hill, Winston. Leading the heifers this week was a brilliant 12 month old Limousin from N Swinbank, Cold Comfort Farm, Neasham which impressed at a healthy £1300, earlier in the day a smart 6 year old Limousin cow with a 3 month old heifer calf from M & P Stead, Whitton Village impressed and sold for £1550.

Store Sheep – Some of the vendors are now making inroads in to their 2021 crop and as a result the quality is suffering, the trade however remains absolutely off the clock. Heaps of hill lambs and Mule’s are included in this weeks £91 average, to look at the mainstream lowland breeds we witnessed Charollais (70) average £94, both Suffolk’s (96) and Texel (483) average £95 and the Beltex (73) lambs offered levelled up at a sublime £111. Staindrop based M T & J Burney led the way this week as their wonderful Beltex crosses twice sold to £138, another extraordinary day, with what might be considered our poorest show of quality this season we somehow still witnessed over 300 lambs sell in to 3 figures. Feeding ewes although predominantly Swaledale’s proved to be an excellent trade.
