Cast Cattle – Again an average beyond 150 pence per kilo as the remarkable cow trade chalks another month off the calendar, absolutely tremendous returns for all classes. No less than seven cattle sold over 200 pence per kilo, four of which were genuine cows over 4 years old whilst the other three 30-47 month olds were led by a lovely Limousin selling for 230 pence. Another feather in the Limousin cap as they led the gross values with a 5 year old cow selling for £1518; the pick of the native breeds this week was a fleshy 38 month old Aberdeen Angus selling for 198ppk and £1502. Best of the bulls this week was a superb 4 year old Limousin from D K Barker, Coatham Munderville selling for 208ppk and £2204 whilst a Salers of the same age from Allison Devereux Farms, Firtree also impressed at 172ppk and £2017. As always we must mention old Mary from the Dairy and yet again the resigning black and whites were in demand, tops today of £1258 for J T Parkin, Marwood with a 7 year old and 174ppk for a youngster from G Thompson & Sons, Butterknowle.

Store Cattle – A truly flying trade, what could be considered an average show of quality mattered little as the buyers pressed on for anything and everything. Brexit and the tighter immigration rules are beginning, it would appear, to change the cattle world; a mere 9 of the steers today were continentals as the 30 native breeds overpowered the Europeans. Remarkably the top 8 steers were all Aberdeen Angus and peaked at a huge £1415 for a trio of strong 20-22 month olds from P Hutchinson, Easington; others from E A & N Thompson & Son, Cumbria and D R Smith, Ferryhill also impressed at £1400 and £1380 respectively. A slightly higher proportion of continentals through the heifers today however it was again the powerful Angus from Easington which set the bar high as they peaked at £1335, they were matched at that price by a stand out British Blue from J W Richardson, Aiskew. Young bulls remain in short supply and as a result are keenly bid for, this weeks best a 13 month old Limousin from W B Rutter & Sons, Scargill at £1040 was closely followed by 9 month old’s from J A & U M Fawcett, Marske.

Breeding Sheep – A good guide as to the intentions of the breeding sheep trade at our early offering, top of the pile this year, as they were last year came the immaculate Suffolk X Mule shearlings from A E & F S Glaves of Cayley Lane, Brompton. This year’s peak of £190 for the Brompton firm is up £10 on the year with their run averaging £180 up £12 on 2020. The best three pens of continental shearlings all sold for £185 as twice Texel’s out of Cheviot Mules from Thornton Park, Thirsk matched a lovely pen of Texel X Mules from G Belt & Son, Normanby Lodge.
Shearlings – Suffolk £190 £180 £170 AE&FS Glaves. £150 G Belt & Son.
Texel £185 £170×2 G Belt & Son.
Continental £185×2 £180×2 Thornton Park.
Store Lambs – As expected the store lamb trade set off in big form, as usual at the opening sale our combination of well grown lowland lambs and late born hill lambs offered more variety than the London Palladium. This years average of £77 is up £7 on last year which was itself some £11 ahead of 2019. Fourteen pens sold beyond £100 with the sale leader G H Lister, Wolsingham for a tremendous single Texel at £119. Of the hill bred lambs which were plentiful we witnessed a peak of £87 for Cheviots and £70 for Swaledales, the smaller long keep lambs look perhaps the most improved trade on the year, hardy and healthy but non the less just babies the annual consignment from the Richardson family of Rosedale as usual found new homes with incredible ease.

Prime Lambs – A light show with several consignments just losing their backs, most likely due to the current heat; some resistance from the buyers this week also as they perhaps sense a slip in trade following the recent Islamic celebrations. A sale average of 239ppk was headed by regular supporter P Turnbull of Kildale reaching 256ppk and W S I Anderson, Dalton sold to a top of £120.

Cast Ewes & Rams – In contrast to the lambs the ewe trade continues to bound along in glorious style, top of the sale a Charollais ram from C Morris, Rokeby at £123 whilst the leading female was a smart Texel hailing from Chop Yat and the good home of S Beeforth, High Crookleith. Cheviot ewes sold to £108 from P D & J A Adamski, Fryup and Mule ewes to £100 from the aforementioned C Morris, Rokeby.
