Darlington Farmers Auction Mart held their weekly sale of Cast Cattle, Store Cattle, Prime Lambs and Cast/Feeding ewes on Monday 5th July 2021. Forward were 228 Cattle and 663 Sheep.

Cast Cattle – A light show were a mesmerising trade, the cow beef keeps on climbing and returns once again beggared belief. The sale average of 163 pence per kilo was in real terms one of the best ever seen, on the whole an average show witnessed all classes absolutely flying. Top price per kilo went to a smart Limousin OTM from W Lodge & Sons, Pity Me at 216 pence, all three from this good pen sold nicely over 200ppk. Of the older cows the top price per kilo went to a shapely British Blonde from G P Addison, Mickleton which reached 192ppk. Some extraordinary gross values were on display, none more so than the Charolais mountain of a cow from Dromanby Bridge Farm which turned the scale around to 1107kg and realised a magnificent £1992, her stablemate also deserves mention and could top many a sale at £1853. More dairy cows forward this week and as with their beefy counterparts the buyers were in top gear, leading the way were a heavyweight trio of 6 to 8 year old Holsteins from J T Parkin, Marwood at £1389, £1261 and £1231. Top milk maid per kilo was just a youngster from A R & C Booth, Bolton-on-Swale reaching 190 pence with older fleshy sorts often above 150ppk. Last but by no means least the bulls, another big trade with a 1074kg 9 year old Aberdeen Angus from A & M J Henshaw, East Layton at 168ppk and £1804 impressing however the leader a wonderful 5 year old 1011kg British Blonde from P M Bradley & Bros, Gilling West which sold for a mighty 206ppk and £2082.

Store Cattle – The store cattle vendors breezed through to the semi finals without conceding a goal, the trade today was utterly sensational. Top price went to magnificent 15 month old young Limousin bull from C G Robinson, Stockton when he sold for a phenomenal £1570. Top of the steer trade today was Darlington regular K Metcalfe, Lands Lane Farm when a strong 27 month old British Blue steer sold for £1435, a fabulous run of strength from Lands Lane saw the 39 head average beyond £1200. Topping the heifers was a real black beauty of a 17 month old Limousin from N Wilson, Witton-le-Wear when she sold for £1390, another one to watch no doubt when the Christmas show takes place. A marvellous day for all classes regardless of age, creed or size; an unbelievable steer average of £1057 is astronomical for early July, most vendors are regularly achieving £100-£150 more than 12 months ago.

Prime Lambs – A pleasing start to the returning evening sheep sales, lambs kept the recent healthy trend alive and were very much in demand, a show of largely grass finished sheep returning a sale SQQ average of 247ppk. Leading the pence per kilo race was Peter Tindale Junior of Shadforth with a superb 43kg Beltex at 276 pence. The top gross value of £129 was achieved on three occasions by three separate vendors, all regular consignors the plaudits go home with AWSM Farms, Richmond; J A & A Herbert, Westwick and J J Horn, Marske.

Cast Ewes – With the Islamic festival fast approaching the ewe trade this evening found a gear we haven’t seen for a long time, a sale average of £114 defies belief as the old girls accelerate towards Qurbani. Top of the tree were a dozen Suffolks from M J Hutchinson, Red Gap Farm reaching £145. The Mule ewes averaged £107 with a top trio from W & C Iceton, Baldersdale tops at £120 whilst a cracking run of 34 Mule’s from J E & E Dobson, Frosterley averaged a brilliant £114.
