Darlington Farmers Auction Mart held their weekly sale of Cast Cattle, Store & Breeding Stock on Monday 27th September. Forward were 345 Cattle and 1069 Sheep.

Cast Cows & OTM – A plainer show on the whole, luckily the weekends tomfoolery around the petrol pumps doesn’t seem to have detracted from the high demand for beef in the live ring, for now at least then it is only the deadweight outlets that are using their best excuses whilst donning masks and striped jumpers. The stand out beast today was a lovely 39 month old Limousin from J M Shotton, Catlow Hall which sold for an impressive £1461, silver medals on both charts went to G & J H Tomlinson & Son, Sunniside Farm as they sold a 4 year old Aberdeen Angus to 178 pence per kilo and a remarkable 15 years young Limousin for £1347. Top of the dairy breeds this week was a hefty 7 year old 850kg Monbelliarde cow from H M Dent, East Farm selling for 154ppk and £1309, leading the Friesian charge were J Brown & Sons, Low Farm with a 4 year old at 144ppk and a 9 year old £1070.

Breeding Cattle – With the complete herd dispersal of Geoff Abbott, Beansheaf Lodge, Malton and another weekly consignment from the Massey family of Waterside Farm, Stockport a healthy crowd gathered and a fine trade was ensured. Leading the trade was a tremendous 8 year old British Blue cow from the Abbott dispersal, suckling a smart Aberdeen Angus crossed heifer calf she sold for £1700, close behind were two Simmental heifers with bull calves at foot from W E Massey, Broadwater Farm which sold for £1680 and £1650. In calf heifers peaked at £1250 from W J Massey, Waterside Farm.

Store Cattle – A later start than some weeks due to the increased numbers of breeding cattle, once the green light shone however the feeding beast were again a marvellous trade, a good start to proceedings as our top priced young bull, a tremendous 17 month old Simmental from C Parker, Newsham Grange  reached £1390. Leading the steers today were a quality quartet of 16-17 month old Charolais from F E Pinkney, The Holt, Richmond which sold for a tasty £1405 whilst the pick of the heifers came from regular supporter H S Hutchinson, White House, Eastgate with a superb Limousin realising £1270, a super show of strong heifers this week saw copious amounts sell at £1200 and beyond.

Store Sheep – A brilliant lamb trade this week as the buyers appeared freshened by the mornings downpour and fit to go forward. Top of the pile were two dozen well grown Texel crosses from S M A & J Swinbank of Whinfield Farm, Brafferton when they sold for £99; also in the £90 plus bracket were another pen of 39 from Whinfield Farm plus a trio of shapely Texel’s from C & M Burnett, St Helens Auckland, a quintet of beautiful Beltex from R E Coatsworth, Hamsterley and half a dozen stretchy Masham lambs from C Bainbridge, Bishop Auckland. Feeding ewes a ferocious trade today with the best a pure Texel from A Peart & Son, Frosterley reaching the dizzy heights of £138.
