Bulls (90) In a week where former Tony Blair advisor – the fool that is John McTernan declared “Farming is an industry we can do without” never has it been so important that the livestock & farming industry in general receives the support that it rightly deserves. With a very wide-ranging assembly of almost 100 Bulls forward, a market average of 318ppk was attained, securing substantial increases for all categories, a third of these selling for a sensational £2400 plus. A remarkable top price of 379ppk & £2959 was accomplished for a Limousin sold by J Layfield, Nackshivan, he however was just eclipsed by John Thwaite’s Pure Limousin proceeding to break the £3000 barrier falling to the hammer at £3078, with both animals ending up on their way to Worsleys, Spenborough. Friesian Bulls would see a considerable increase in price with the top slot going to regular vendors – The Hall family, Kilton Hall Farm at 283ppk & £1814 purchased by Bowland Foods. MA&PD Foster, Smith House Farm sold the lead grossing Friesian at £1894 to S.S Meat Wholesale Ltd. Surprisingly not many native bred bulls forward, Northumberland based CH&SE Armstrong, Middle Moor Farm marketed 3 of the top 4 with a Hereford selling for 298ppk & £2139 and an Angus for 290ppk & £2250 both were purchased by JA Jewitt Ltd, Spennymoor.

Clean Cattle (100) With demand through the roof and a range of excellent quality on offer it was no wonder Heifers saw a spectacular rise in demand and price to average an incredible 360ppk up 15ppk on the week with an astounding 5 females breaking through the 400ppk barrier and 50% of the sale surpassing the 360ppk mark. Charging forward to the front of the queue at 411ppk & £2420 was husband & wife team, Robin & Imi Hirst, Neasham Springs, their flawlessley finished Limousin heifer selling to Worsley Wholesale Meats. Brian Walker, Birch Springs was only just shy of reaching the £2500 milestone by a few pounds with his Limousin Heifer which sold for £2483 – assuring top spot for the lead grossing beast on the day. With steers securing an average of 340ppk it was relative newcomers to the fat market – TM&A Bellas & Son, Timpton Hill who produced the top price steer at 274ppk & £2277 to absolute perfection, however SH Watson & Son, Low Fields Farm’s Limousin Steer just pipped him to the post by £10 for the title of top grossing steer, this time selling to Hartshead Meats.

Lambs (1981) Last week’s stop the press averages were never going to be duplicated again, with the trade driving the lambs forward in numbers to Darlingtons Thursday sale. Hearing is deceiving and seeing is believing as this week’s sale all in averages 302p/kg. Thick tops and big chops are where the money is made with the well fed and bred lambs reaping the rewards of a two-tier trade, with meat lambs taking the day’s top placings, with the leaner end of the lambs slightly more difficult to shift. Top of the pops and normally more a custom to the top prices in the lambs at the turn of the new season with springers saw John Simpson of Caldwell who tipped the scales at 52kg and rang the sale bell at £226 in the lump and also completing the double and taking the top pence per kilo also at 435p/kg. J Pallister not to be out down done also broke the barrier with lambs to £219. The best of the weighted continental lambs well rewarded with plenty of pens between the £140-£160 mark. Lambs can be sold to vendors advantage weekly, please do not hesitate to contact one of the team to discuss all marketing options.
