Thursday 19th December – Darlington Auction Mart had forward:
61 Prime Bulls sold to 378ppk & £3274
12 Prime Steers sold to 358ppk & £2304
49 Prime Heifers sold to 397ppk & £2547
1622 Lambs sold to 408ppk & £200
218 Cast Sheepsold to £188
Bulls (61) The final offering before Christmas saw lots of festive cheer, resulting in the dearest bull trade of the year. A reduced show averaged a tremendous 337ppk & £2365. Over 50 Bulls including dairy and native bred sold for over 300ppk and for the first time ever there was 4 smashing the £3000 barrier. JH&M&NW Brown, West Hartburn Farm topped the ppk in spectacular style with a marvellous 750kg Limousin selling to Worsley Wholesale Meats for 378ppk & £28345. Out in front for the lead grossing price was JA Matten & Sons, Avenue Grange’s trio of continentals they almost got all 3 consecutive top slots, selling to 373ppk & £3274 however P Weightman & Sons, Hallfield Farm squeezed into second place with a pure Blonde D’Aquitaine which sold for 375ppk & £3108. JA&M Boyes Ltd, Strathmore House sold the only native bred bulls -an excellent run of 5 Herefords cashing in at a superb 348ppk & £2685 – average 331ppk & £2445. The Hall’s of Kilton were once again the principle front runners in the Friesian department with their top Black & White going under the hammer at 294ppk & £1922.

Clean Cattle (61) – A decreased & varied entry of cattle forward, but probably due to the forthcoming festive period, trade was easier with steer’s averaging 320ppk & Heifers 343ppk. Neil White, Barf House saw his Limousin Heifer sell to 397ppk & £2123 to Worsley Wholesale Meats and NE Dyson, Gebdykes Farm was unrivalled for the lead grossing clean beast, securing top spot with a Limousin Heifer, selling to John Penny & Sons, Rawdon for £2541. The best of the steers came curtesy of Messrs Askwiths, Low Mown Meadows, their top beast from a Quartet of Limousin steers sold to an unsurpassed 358ppk & £2304 and was purchased – as indeed all 4 were, by Hartshead Meats.

Lambs (1622) With Christmas right around the corner, all festivities generally start with a bang from a Christmas cracker, the lamb trade took a festive boost and went up, up and away, leaving even Santa Claus himself unable to deliver the goods as well as Darlington’s Thursday sheep ring. Today’s penultimate sale of prime sheep for 2024, left many astounded not expecting to see lambs dearer, with a whole sale average of 326ppk, with an SQQ of 327ppk weight and meat key to the returns with the coin in the loin, with the best fed lambs taking all of the days leading highs. Top Price of the day goes to RE&L Frank, Crabtree Farm, with a superb pen of 5 Texel lambs at 49kg reaching £200 or 408PPK, whilst this good home also had lambs at £198. W Denham, Dent Gate, had a run of lambs resulting in a top price of £198 or 300ppk with a cracking 66kg Cheviot. Lamb trade overall much dearer and heavy weight lambs in demand. Cast Sheep (218) Today’s ewe trade remained very similar to last week, resulting in yet again another terrific trade. Top price of the day goes to MJ Marley, Holywell Farm, with a Texel ewe reaching £188. Also in joint first is W Denham, Dentgate, with a Texel Tup also making £188. AWSM Farms reached £168, whilst WA Wardman, Thrushwood Farm, topped at £164. Best of the horned ewes today were £100 plus, providing a festive feeling for all vendors.
