Prime Bulls (79) – Bravo again from the bull ring as the temperature warms both inside and out to see a good quality show average an outstanding 404ppk and £2838 per head, every bull sold over 300 pence. Four brilliant Limousin bulls between 630kg and 683kg from three vendors tied at the top per kilo when W & M Knaggs & Son, East Newbiggin and Renton Highlaws, Morpeth matched a cracking pair from J E Jordon & Son, The Brocks at 454 pence. A super sort from Foxton Livestock, Abbey Farm followed at 450ppk ahead of ten in the 440’s and ten more in the 430’s. Top of the gross values was a thumping 921kg Limousin from J A Matten & Sons, Avenue Grange which sold for £3877, up next were a fine duo from A C Simpson & Son, McNeil Farm both beyond £3500 with no less than twenty-eight others between £3000 and £3500. The handy Hereford’s from J A & M Boyes Ltd, Strathmore House once again led the native charge with tops this week of 398ppk and £3072 whilst the day’s most successful Friesian feeders were R Hall & Son, Kilton Hall at £2293 and 348ppk. Clean Cattle (100) – Just wait a moment whilst we hit copy and paste… Yes, you’ve guessed it, the clean are dearer again! A lighter show in both weight and numbers found another ferocious frenzy of bidding as the unbelievable heifers averaged 418 pence per kilo with the steers a very credible 398ppk. Topping the sale per kilo twice at 458 pence were excellent Limousin heifers from the regular selling J V & J A Hodgson, The Grange; the red-hot Hodgson’s produced another at 450ppk with the Hirst’s of Neasham in the mix at 451ppk and ten further heifers in the 440’s on the day. A shapely Limousin from M Robinson & Sons, East Alwent led the steer prices per kilo when he sold at 431 pence, the consistent Askwiths of Low Mown Meadows followed just a penny behind. Top of the gross values today was a tremendous 707kg Limousin heifer from T W Clark & Son, Frankland Farm when she reached £2891 whereas the top gross valued steer hailed from J B & N Harrison, Colepike Home Farm with a 716kg Limousin at £2856. A super seven further cattle sold over £2700 with eighteen between £2600 and £2700 as the clean dream continued. To give some context on just how good the beef trade is looking… this week last year the sale topped at 354 pence per kilo, today only four of the one hundred failed to beat that figure. Prime Hoggs (1355) – Numbers lower and with demand outstripping supply trade improved by some £10 to £12 on the week to see them weighed straight all in average 350ppk with an SQQ of 380ppk which equated to £167.30 per head. Once again, the export weights look the sharpest however the heavyweights were noticeably dearer as well. Frank Errington of Lily Hill finished his 2024 crop on a flyer when he led the sale with a superb 45kg Texel hogg which sold for £201 (446ppk). High on the pence per kilo list followed WKMM Lamb, Doe Park and T A Greensit & Sons, Friars Garth at 434 pence before another fine pair from Lily Hill at 431ppk and then the top forty-five from R Atkinson, High Greenbury Farm between 426ppk and 429ppk. On the gross value leader board behind the topper followed A W Dixon, West Heddon at £200 then JK & CE Farming, Blue House at £199 with the High Greenbury hoggs topping at £198. Away from the terminal breeds trade improved for all classes as we saw Hampshire Down’s to £177, Blackface to £161 and Mule’s to £151 on three occasions. A few of the top averages are listed below.

Cast Ewes/Rams (82) – Numbers very low as lambing time is all of a sudden upon us, trade absolutely excellent to average all in £139.26. Top of the day at £246 was a cracking Texel from Namens Leases Farm Ltd, Brick Kiln Lane; she was followed by a hefty Blue Faced Leicester ewe from J & M J Walton, West Shotton Farm at £220. Mule ewes averaged £118 and sold to a top of £180 from B & L Robson, Gawen House and Swaledale’s topped at £80 from F Ward, Rogerley Hall.
