Prime Bulls (73) – The bull average fell 8ppk and £30 per head on the week to see them level all in at 369ppk and £2663 today. Undoubtedly the heavy weights and best shapes would look less money than they have done in recent weeks, the lighter weight bulls and particularly the first dairy crosses however would be every bit as good, if not better than witnessed for some time. Still eight bulls surpassed 400 pence per kilo as LW Martin, Wayworth Farm and Messrs Hird, Meadow View joined two toppers from Rochester & Murray, Glebe Farm and a real quality quartet from the Renton’s of High Highlaws. The hot stuff from Highlaws ran out with the top three prices per kilo with the best proving to be a stunning 747kg Limousin reaching 413 pence. Even with the bigger bulls proving harder to place, still sixteen sailed over £3000, top of them all at an impressive £3506 was a thumping 918kg Limousin from BA & C Pearson Ltd, Stainsby Hill Farm. The Pearson pen followed at £3239 with a 818kg Limousin ahead of the Renton’s of High Highlaws at £3194 and JJ Horn, Bushy Park at £3171. Aberdeen Angus topped the native breed lists this week when AG Watson & Sons, Nunstainton Grange sold to 398ppk and JA & M Boyes Ltd, Strathmore House to £2740. Friesian feeders this week all tried in vain to catch the fleshy sorts of MA & PD Foster, Smithy House Farm who led the pack with tops of 329ppk and £2289. Below are a handful of the top pen averages.

Clean Cattle (97) – The handier weights are smoking hot, unbelievable returns for the butcher’s shop beasts, all included the heifers averaged a stunning 432ppk and £2564 whilst a plainer offering of steers than usual checked in at 383ppk and £2574 per head. It must be said that in similar fashion to the bull trade some resistance was apparent for the heavy weights however the 520kg-620kg cattle just got dearer and dearer as the sale progressed. Not once or twice but thrice heifers hit the heights of 495 pence per kilo as two from JV & JA Hodgson, The Grange joined one from W Swinbank & Sons, Greystones. The second string from the Swinbank’s followed closely at 493ppk with PJ & MP Gilhespy, Low House hot on their heels at 490ppk; no less than fifteen further heifers sold in the 470’s and 480’s. A tie also occurred at the top of the steer race per kilo with two vendors reaching 448 pence, credits go to Anthony Swinbank & Son, Springwell and Taylor Bros Ltd, Belle Isle. Top of the gross values this week was a hefty British Blue steer from CW Gray, Low Hall Farm when he tipped the scales to 799kg and sold for £3132; top heifer in the lump was the aforementioned 390ppk cracker from the Gilhespy family of Low House at 629kg she realised £3082. A super sort from Rochester & Murray, Glebe Farm followed when their Limousin heifer sold for £3054 narrowly ahead of an onslaught from the successful Swinbank’s and the hot Hodgson’s with numerous heifers between them either side of £3000.

Prime Lambs (1400) – Thick flesh remains the key ingredient as the lamb trade slightly stutters its way in to September, down a couple of pounds per head on last week, it is worth remembering that the sale average today of 305ppk and £142.51 per head still remains 16ppk and £9.35 in front of the same week last year. A remarkable statistic this week, weighed straight as always, we saw just twenty-six lambs offered weighing under 40kg, credit therefore must certainly go to the vendors for their patience during this summer’s grass shortage and for drawing lambs to fit the market. Topping the prices per kilo at 375 pence, not for the first time, were the young Davies sisters from Houghton Grange with an excellent trio of 40kg Beltex lambs. No notable high flyers in the pounds per head stakes however £160 to £180 was very frequently achieved, top of them all was a smart 53kg Texel from P Tindale, Preston Tilery.

Cast Ewes/Rams (260) – The ewe trade remains good, as with the lamb’s flesh is paramount to the buyer’s needs. All in, today’s sale averaged just over £110 per head for a show probably considered below par.
