Darlington Farmers Auction Mart held a special sale of breeding cattle in conjunction with their weekly sale of cast cattle and store stock on Monday 3rd June 2024. Forward were 325 cattle and 323 sheep.

Breeding Cattle – A super days trading for the breeding cattle with all vendors exceeding expectations as a full gallery of buyers bid freely to fill their summer grazing. The top five prices all came from J Sisterton, Newlands Haugh with a super run of Aberdeen Angus, Hereford and Simmental heifers and second calvers suckling young Parthenais and Charolais calves and selling away between £2500 and £2600. Next in line at £2180 were two vendors; firstly, R B Watson, Strand Foot sold a Limousin heifer with her April born bull calf at that price before a remarkable 9-year-old Stabiliser cow from P Prudom & Son Ltd, Northfield Farm matched her with her 3-month-old bull calf at foot. A great day for the Prudom cows and calves as the twenty Stabilisers cleared to average £1915.

Cast Cattle – A better show than in recent weeks and an improved trade to go with it leaving impressive sale averages of 188ppk and a whopping £1274 per head. Some classy sorts from W I Suddes & Son, Cornsay Limousin’s took the spoils this week with a fabulous 4-year-old reaching 248 pence per kilo and a super 7-year-old top of the gross values at £2135. The same good home topped the stock bulls at 190ppk and £2046, top of the natives was an excellent Aberdeen Angus from B & L Robson, Gawen House at 206ppk and £1693 whilst the dairy girls were led over the line by Little Newsham Farms at 176ppk and £1281.

Store Cattle – Still plenty of steam in the feeding trade as we head in to June; top of the young bulls was an excellent Limousin from B Watson, Baal Hill Farm when he sold for £1660 holding off a strong challenge from another Limousin at £1610 from E Penty, Oak Tree. The successful Limousin breed followed favourably topping the store cattle also as M Robinson & Sons, East Alwent Farm sold heifers to £1670 and A P & E Procter, Hillcrest sold steers to £1650. Top of the native breeds came from G A & C Jopling, Eastgate House who sold Aberdeen Angus steers to a top of £1630 with three Hereford’s from G W & M Singleton & Sons, Farlington Grange impressing at £1455.

Ewes & Lambs – The season might be coming to a close but the trade remains every bit as good as it was in its prime, the ewes with lambs today averaged £91.73 per life. A dozen super Texel ewes with strong twins from Joe Beal, Auckland Park led the way when they sold for £342, top of the prices per life were thirteen Texel’s from R G & G Rutter, Hamsterley with single lambs at £265. Thirty-four Mule and continental ewes with eighty-five lambs from J H Johson, Roddymoor filled the ring and in doing so enjoyed possibly the trade of the day when selling at £318 per family.
