Darlington Farmers Auction Mart held their weekly sale of cast cattle, store and breeding stock on Monday 4th August 2025. Forward were 231 cattle and 1083 sheep.

Cast Cattle – Super scenes in the cow ring as some high quality at the top end of proceedings helped averages rise to 282ppk and £1885 per head, some sensational returns at the summit this week. Bulls first, and a wonderful trio are all very deserving of mention; an excellent 35-month-old Limousin from G C & K J White & Son, Rigg Farm sold for a stunning 408ppk and £3178, he was arguably matched by a brilliant 39-month-old British Blue from N & A D Brass & Son, Ox Close at 394ppk and £3514 whilst not to be outdone was a marvellous 6-year-old Limousin from B Watson, Baal Hill Farm at 328ppk and a day topping £3624. The cream of the cow crop was also in very high demand and the British Blue’s claimed the limelight, top per kilo at 396 pence was a cracking sort from M Robinson & Sons, East Alwent whilst top in the lump was a stunning sort from W & M Knaggs & Son, East Newbiggin at £2841. OTM heifers sold to tops of 379ppk and £2804 from T W Clark & Son, Frankland Park whereas the native breeds topped at 334ppk for an Aberdeen Angus from W & J Herbert, Woodwell House or £2505 for a hefty dairy bred Hereford cow from S Beeforth, High Crookleith. Last but not least come the Friesian’s, top calls went to Stainton Hill Farms with an OTM heifer at 300ppk and £1775.

Store Cattle – A varied show typical of the season mattered little as all creeds, colours, shapes and sizes continue in excellent form. Early in the ring came an excellent 5-year-old Limousin cow with calf at foot from L Booton, Manor Farm which impressed when selling for £3020. Feeding bulls followed and twice reached the heights of £2220 when a smart 13-month-old Limousin from T C Walton, 4 Middridge Farm matched a strong Hereford from A P Taylor, Ox Close Farm. A pen of beautiful pure Limousin heifers from J & F Hartley & Sons, Low Shipley led the store cattle trade when they sold three over £2400 to a top of £2460. Following at £2280 was a strong Aberdeen Angus heifer from C Dawson, Nunstainton with our top steer next at £2200, this one also an Angus hailed from D R Smith, East Roughlea. A pen of 15-month-old Beef Shorthorn steers from W Denham, Dent Gate impressed selling to a top of £2190 whilst of the younger cattle none bettered a super 7-month-old British Blue steer from R Tiplady, Redhouse Farm at an incredible £1760.

Store Sheep – The store lambs look a very straight go indeed, the long-term projects are certainly dearer on the week and the strong sorts remain very good as the whole sale averaged an excellent £112.18. Top of the day at £162 were four fabulous Texel’s from Luke Turnbull, South Farm, any amount of the strong lambs followed between £120 and £150. Seventy-four Mule lambs average £109 this week and sold to a top of £110.50 for a smart pen of fifty-three from first time vendors K & H Adams & Son, Potter House. Hill cheviot lambs from S Hallam, Grange Head Farm sold extremely well to see a pen of forty-two reach £100. Feeding ewe trade looks exquisite, top of £202 went to a fat Texel from T Grix, Park Farm whilst Herdwick’s sold to £114, Cheviot’s to £132 and Swaledale’s to £102.
