Darlington farmers Auction Mart held their weekly sale of Cast Cattle, Store and Breeding Stock on Monday 28th February 2022. Forward were 337 Cattle and 492 Sheep.

Cast Cattle – Quite possibly the dearest they’ve ever been! Absolutely off the clock this week, a good show averaged a mouth-watering 172 pence per kilo and a staggering £1205. Starting with the pence per kilo, eight cattle sold over 200, the top three were all OTM heifers as J A & U M Fawcett, Marske sold a Limousin for 218ppk; W A Dinsdale & Son, Grinton sold a British Blue for 222ppk but our stand out winner at a massive 228ppk was a superb 34-month-old Limousin from N Swinbank, Neasham. Top older cow per kilo was a wonderful 10-year-old British Blonde from regular Cumbrian raiders P J & E S Rogerson of Great Asby, the beautiful Blonde from the West also ended the day as our top gross valued female when she returned at an impressive £1635. Stock bull trade of gigantean proportions, the best this week a fleshy 7-year-old Limousin from G Calvert & Sons, Keld sold for a superb 212ppk whilst our biggest bull of the week a 9-year-old British Blue from G H & R G Stobbs, Wolsingham weighed 1010kg enabling him to reach an impressive gross value of £1979. As always mention must go to the parlour princesses, tops this week a 5-year-old Montbelliarde from J E Holliday & Son, Witton Park at £1446 or 188ppk achieved by a Friesian OTM belonging to I F & C M Herring & Son, North Cowton. Last but by no means least the native breed highlights, both the Longhorn (Raby Home Farm) and Aberdeen Angus (P Sobota) breeds sold 9-year-old cows to 170 pence per kilo however it was a hefty Hereford from W & R Kemp, St Helens Auckland who took the gross value bragging rights away at £1392.

Store Cattle – The beef boom ends February in scintillating fashion, another extraordinary day in the store ring as prices continue to rise. Beginning with the young bulls and of the 85 offered, the top 40 which were all under 12 months of age all sold for four figures, of these the leading seven all hailed from the superb run produced by Stephen Allardyce of Tarland, Aberdeenshire. The top pair from this home were both 11-month-old Charolais and surpassed £1400, the high-quality run of 25 Scottish bulls averaged a phenomenal £1169. Some terrific bulls today certainly challenged the Northern raiders, B R Lawson of Whashton’s trio averaged £1256 whilst W A Richardson, Hutton Magna produced four to average £1193 and up from the South today Sheffield based T Ducker brought with them five which levelled at £1167.
The steer and heifer buyers came out fighting this week, a humdinger of a trade ensued with the strong cattle in particular in immense demand. More joy for the Aberdonian Allardyce consignment as they again led the way, an exceptional 17-month-old Charolais steer topped the sale at £1495 whilst the same good run’s leading heifer sold for £1375, on this occasion, aptly from Aberdeen our top heifer was a 17-month-old Angus. As with the bulls plenty of good cattle were present to prevent the travelled beast having things all their own way, great sorts from J R & M Richardson, Winston; T Coulthard & Son, Elton and A P & E Procter, Great Musgrave all enjoyed high prices as the exceptional trade spread its wings wide.

Store Sheep – The balloon shows no sign of bursting as the store sheep continue in excellent form. Tops this week a superb pen of twenty empty Scotch Mule gimmer hoggs from J E Burton, Staindrop which sold for an impressive £124, the best of those destined to finish came from J E Holliday & Son, Witton Park whose Texel’s sold to a high of £120. Feeding ewes on another planet this week, a mesmerising trade with the pick a pen of strong Texel and Suffolk ewes from R A Patterson & Son, Capheaton selling for £137 apiece.
