Prime Bulls (68) – Bull trade remaining very healthy as the top ten sailed beyond £2000 and a quality quartet sold over 270ppk, todays impressive sale averaged some 235 pence per kilo. Down from Cupar, Fife early this morning was M I Wainwright of Todhall Farm, included in the cross-border consignment was a magnificent pure British Blue bull which stole the show when he sold for 276 pence per kilo and £2357. In the chasing pack were some superb sorts from the consistent T N & J Hall, Ainstable Hall and the patiently fed Limousin’s of A C Simpson & Son, McNeil Farm. Dairy bull feeders enjoyed a fast trade today, none more so than J M & S Walton, Brettanby Farm, Barton who topped the sale at £1463 and G W Dobson & Son, Wood Close Farm, South Wingate with a Fleckveih at 209 pence per kilo, best Friesian per kilo at 208 pence came from J E & B Morgan & Sons, Bishop Middleham. Clean Cattle (146) – Another solid trade with a varied show on offer this week, the top eight heifers sold beyond 300 pence helping them to a sale average of 265 pence per kilo whilst an eclectic mix of steers sold to average 235ppk. With a temporary change of voice in the rostrum our regular Cumbrian kidly cutting his holiday short to fill in for Scott it was fittingly a heifer from his native County which led the way, a beautiful 530kg Limousin from T N & J Hall, Ainstable Hall sold to H Taylor & Sons Butchers, Darlington for 316 pence per kilo; the following quartet all hailed from different vendors as reaching the top spots proved to be a hard-fought race. Top steer per kilo was a cracker from I Marshall & Sons, Bishop Middleham which sold for 287ppk, the same good home also sold at 285ppk ahead of a quality run from Driffield’s R S Hall & Sons. Top gross values were also closely contested, the aforementioned Driffield feeders led the steers at £1800 however twice heifers snook ahead with M I Wainwright, Cupar again in top form reaching £1831 but not catching this week’s crown jewel from Coxhoe’s W A Armstrong with a 626kg Limousin selling for £1840. New Season Lambs (1946) – A nice show forward sold terrifically well, as always with a 100% straight weighbridge the sale averaged 313ppk and £129. Topping the sale at 367 pence per kilo were a trio of cracking continental lambs from Walworth’s Alan Binks; luckily for Alan our conscientious mart staff this morning presumed him still to be suffering from Glastonbury fever and took charge of drawing his lambs for him, we aim to please. Following the smiling Walworth consignor were excellent runs from regular sale leaders J C Simson, Caldwell and also W & M Knaggs & Son, Sadberge. An amazing achievement to today for Richard Bailes of Cole Hill Farm, Elwick as with almost 2000 lambs offered, he scooped the top 5 gross values, the pick of this exceptional run was an absolute gem of a 50kg Texel selling for £162.

Prime Hoggs (223) – The hogg trade keeps its self very keen as Qurbani waits in the wings, a dozen excellent Texel’s from C Harle & Sons, Brandon impressed at 58kg and a pleasing £161; also selling at £161 were some heavyweights from J W & B Firby, Brafferton whilst the other vendors in the high prices were R H Thompson & Son, Witton-le-Wear. No doubting the top price per kilo today which went to a single superstar from a great run produced by F M Martindale, Wolsingham.

Cast Ewes & Rams (826) – A big show of cast sheep scraped our total number sold over 3000 on the day, the ewe trade is good however no dramatic lifts in the run up to EID as numbers appear nationally, ewes averaged £96 and the tups £118. Top price went to a monstrous old girl from J C Simpson, Caldwell at £158 with our top ram from R G Richardson, Sunderland just behind. Best of the Mule’s this week came from R Lawson & Son, Sedgefield at £122 whilst Scotch Blackface from Kildale based M W Cook & Son sold to £95. Some of the early weaned Swaledale’s are beginning to appear and this week peaked at £90 from Norris Bell, Weatherfield.
