Darlington Farmers Auction Mart held their weekly sale of prime stock on Thursday 9th March 2023. Forward were 186 cattle, 3127 sheep and 10 pigs

Prime Bulls (62) – Not a particulary good show of quality however trade absolutely bouncing along, a fast trade for the R and O Grades mixed with a few genuine superstar’s at the business end helped the sale average up to an excellent 275ppk. Nothing bettered the homebred heroics of J B Luck & Son, Milestone House with a fabulous 768kg Limousin bull when he led both the pence per kilo and the gross values at a wonderous 343 pence and £2634. Hot on his heels followed a tremendous run from A G Watson & Sons, Nunstainton Grange which thrice sold in the 330’s. Over twenty sold beyond £2000, aside from our leader the two other vendors beyond £2500 were R Hall & Son, Kilton Hall and J E Jordon & Son, Longhirst. Friesian trade is still fantastic, this weeks winners in that department wre local sellers J R Knox & Son at 249ppk and Elwick based F S Sturrock & Sons a sublime £1964. See below some hot averages.

Clean Cattle (124) – Good lord, the dearest yet, heifers averaged a stratospheric 314 pence per kilo which is a new DFAM record average, a lesser show of steers this week averaged 282ppk. The numbers are astonishing with only 25 of the 105 heifers failing to reach 300 pence and a mind blowing 55 of the 124 clean cattle reaching 320ppk or more. A red letter day for Neil Brown of West Hartburn Farm as he flew to the top of the leader board with Limousin heifers selling at 346 and 347ppk; seven super sorts from five different vendors joined Neil in the 340’s with a remarkable 22 in the packed 330’s. Top steer per kilo belonged to P & N Tattersall, Ellerton, York at 319 pence whilst the biggest gross valued steer hailed from the king of Coxhoe W A Armstrong who reached £2230. Another record fell as the top 27 heifers all sold beyond £2000, an unbelievable run of ten from Barker Farming Partnership, Scorton blew the roof off when they all sold between £2224 and £2449. Prime Hoggs (2615) – Pleasing numbers with twice the amount as the same week last year, a mixed bag of quality with a shortage of E and U grade hoggs available. Premiums therefore paid on the best bred and also the 40-44kg hoggs, as always weighed straight this weeks sale averaged 234ppk. Top price per kilo at 309 pence were a quality quartet from Nottinghamshire’s P R Weaver weighing 51kg and selling for £158 to Yorkshire Halal. Two vendors bettered the £158 benchmark when four 56kg Beltex from H G Thompson sold for £160 and a pair of huge 80kg Cheviot Mules from South Yorkshire’s P Bisby did the business for ‘Biz’ at £162. Any amount of well fed hoggs £140–£155 including the regular run from the exceptional feeding of A C Simpson & Son, McNeil Farm who are always in the top price per head column.

Cast Sheep (512) – Ewes averaged over £100 as the trade stays firm, the middle of the road ewes looked to enjoy the pick of this weeks prices as we head in to March the usual lift is now certainly upon us. Once again the Nottinghamshire producer P R Weaver was in the limelight when his pure Texel led the way at £200, stacks of heavy ewes sold over £150 with the biggest Mules in the high £120’s and fed horned ewes proved very easy to move.
