Store & Breeding Cattle – Following the cow trade the store cattle buyers were also in top gear as 2022’s beef boom continues in quite some style. Strong in calf Simmental heifers from Dromonby Bridge Farm kicked of proceedings with a peak of £1850, the young bulls followed and a small offering topped at £1060 for a Hereford shown by Heighington’s A P Taylor of Ox Close Farm. A varied show of feeding stores was certainly in demand no matter what size or shape, leading the way was a sensational 22-month-old Limousin heifer from D & H M Hodgson, Knitsley at £1440, the two heifers chasing her hardest were both Aberdeen Angus from B Willaimson, Butterknowle and A Gregg, East Boldon. Nine of the top dozen steers were all native breeds however the popular Limousin’s took the yellow jersey once again, a fantastic 15-month-old from S Ayre, Egglestone led the way at £1330, of the aforementioned natives it was the Aberdeen Angus of G & J H Tomlinson which impressed along with strong showings from P D Shepherd, High Coniscliffe and Messrs Gregg of East Boldon once again.

Store Sheep – Another absolute humdinger of a trade, certainly no bargains in the DFAM January sale this week as over 350 hoggs sold at £100 or more. The journey south from Capheaton paid dividends for F Hickson & Sons of Homilton Farm as their single black Beltex lambs life certainly mattered, it mattered to the tune of £144; close behind a top trio of Suffolk’s from D R Smith, Ferryhill sold for £132, the Ferryhill firm also consigned the top priced Mule lambs with half a dozen selling for £106.
