Darlington Farmers Auction Mart held their weekly sale of Cast Cattle, Store and Breeding Stock on Monday 18th October 2021. Forward were 268 Cattle and 2682 Sheep.

Cast Cattle – Dearer on the week, an impressive average today of 134ppk with some of the fitter and younger beast a flyer in comparison to prices seen last time of asking, the pensioners and more weathered looking old dears appear a similar trade. J S Foster & Son, West End Farm, Bowes produced a wonderful Limousin OTM which led the way when she sold for £1493 and 226 pence per kilo, hot on her heels was a superb 8 year old Limousin cow from J L Marks, Gilly Flatts, Bishopton which sold for £1466 and 202ppk. The pick of the native breeds this week came when W & C Iceton, East Thorngarth Hill sold a Beef Shorthorn for £1241 and 168ppk whilst our milk maids peaked when young Holstein’s from A R & C Booth, Bolton-on-Swale sold at 172ppk and £1145. Top of the stock bulls this week was an impressive 10 year old Limousin from the Iron Man of Rosedale as T & R Dent of Craven Garth Farm’s bull reached 150ppk and £1414.

Breeding Cattle – Young Limousin Bulls from C Moffett of Backandsides Farm, Hummerbeck led the prices at £1640, away from these it was all about the “Belties” as a genuine herd reduction of Belted Galloway cows from A Stewart, Mill Wood Farm, Rushyford attracted plenty of attention ringside. Leading the trade for the Rushyford consignment was a nice 7 year old cow with a bull calf at foot which sold for £1100 and heads off to take pride of place in the suckler herd at ‘The Horny Cow’ farm shop, Wilton.

Store Cattle – A lot of weathered cattle are appearing as the autumn begins take its toll, the buyers of the short keep stores are certainly it seems keener on a little more flesh, to the untrained eye this could almost make the trade appear inconsistent; the younger stores remain a fine trade as something to overwinter and produce the old fashioned fertiliser must be a smart move at the moment. Leading the way were a hefty pair of 18 month old Limousin steers from P R E Marwood, Huller Bush, Marwood which sold for £1300 and £1280, close behind came a stretchy 19 month old Aberdeen Angus from J D & G Hugill, Turtle Hill Farm, Faceby at £1275. A close race to top the heifer trade this week saw the first four all within £20 of one another, leading the line was a brilliant 15 month old British Blue from J H Johnson, White Lea Farm, Roddymoor as she edged out a Limousin G H & R G Stobbs, High Wiserley Farm at £1285 and a strong pair of Aberdeen Angus from B Williamson, Marsfield Farm at £1270. The Blue’s were in the news earlier as well when the young bulls sold, the British Blue in question was a shapely 16 month old from L W Martin, Wayworth Farm, Commondale which sold for £1185, close behind was a fine 9 month old Charolais cross from E Parsons, Newstead Farm at £1155.

Breeding Sheep – The breeding sheep season is entering its twilight, still however time for Nick Taylor of Lupton Bros, Wass Grange to make his maiden voyage to DFAM as a vendor and enjoy a fine trade, twice pens of Nick’s Mule Shearlings sold for £175 apiece. The pick of this weeks gimmer lambs came from M Metcalfe, Westgate who’s Mule’s peaked at £130 with the lovely run of 52 averaging £107. To find our top priced warranted ewes we head down the dale just one village to Eastgate and the good home of M & W Maddison, Sunderland Cleugh who’s 3 croppers peaked at £128 per head.

Store Sheep – Numbers are bringing buyers and buyers will in turn bring numbers, an unbelievable 40 active accounts were functioning this week as the store lamb trade stays very firm indeed. More success to report for Weardale as the top priced lambs hailed from Wolsingham and Messrs Cadman & Edwards, Redgate Grange with a pair of tremendous Texels selling for £125 each, next in line were two more Weardonians as P J Anderson & Son, Wolsingham and A Newton, Westgate completed the medal places on our podium. Fifteen pens sold at £100 or more with a further 220 lambs selling between £90 and £99. Feeding ewes in line with the killing trade and marginally easier on the week.
