Cast Cattle – The cow trade continued at very similar levels; a few plain cows pulled the averages back slightly to an all in 261ppk and £1644 but little to no change on the week in real terms. The top dozen or so sold over 300ppk and a similar number achieved £2000 or more. Top per kilo at 358 pence was a fleshy Montbeliarde OTM from A Willey, Broomfield Farm, Chopwell. Next in line at 342ppk was an Aberdeen Angus OTM heifer from MJ Hutchinson, Red Gap Farm whilst the top older cow per kilo at 326 pence was an excellent Limousin from JC Thwaite & Son, Cragg Hill. Top of the gross values in the cows was a tremendous 832kg Limousin from S Iceton, West Newhouse Farm when she reached £2462, following her was a thumping 879kg Hereford cow from W & R Kemp & Son, Wigdon Walls at £2443. An excellent Limousin stock bull from F Ward, Rogerley Hall impressed when he sold for a marvellous 330ppk and £3052 whereas the Friesian’s topped at a wonderful 316ppk for an OTM heifer from the in-form A Willey, Broomfield and sold to £1991 for a great cow from JD & IW Sayer & Tallentire, Town Farm.

Store & Breeding Cattle – Despite the falling finished beef prices confidence remains high at the store ring with all classes still very much sought after. A handful of breeders began proceedings, topping the trade at £3300 was a sweet Limousin heifer with a calf at foot from R Simpson & Sons, Temperance Farm, she was knocked down to B Lowson, Hamsterley. Healthy numbers of feeding bulls allowed the buyers to bid freely to fill yards as multiple accounts operated for all shapes and sizes. The run of the day certainly came from Harrogate based RL & AR Phillips, Firtrees Farm; the flying Phillips sold a 13-month-old Limousin at £2260 and followed with five others between £2080 and £2240. Aberdeen Angus bulls sold to £2070 for a 12-month-old from JW Carr Partnership, Wagtail Farm whilst the next best of the natives was another smart bull from Firtrees Farm, a Beef Shorthorn at £1920. The clean stores are also taking very little notice of the sticky finished beef trade, buyers aplenty and all sizes proving very, very good to cash. Top at £2210 was a super 15-month-old Limousin steer from I Newton & Son, Gibbet Hill Farm, following at £2200 was a strong British Blue steer from J Holliday & Son, Woodland House Farm. The top priced heifer accolade went to C & JC Stephenson, Pikestone with a stretchy 18-month-old Limousin; B Watson of Baal Hill followed at £2020 also with a Limousin. Plenty of native and dairy bred stores included, highlights included a 12-month-old Aberdeen Angus steer from RL & AR Phillips selling for £2040. DM McLurg, Blakeley Hill sold Aberdeen Angus heifers to £1900 whilst N & A Hunter, Woodlands Hall hit £1890 with their Beef Shorthorn heifer. Finally, a remarkable run of dairy and first crossed stores from A Willey, Broomfield Farm contained many highlights; the charging Chopwell based firm sold Montbeliarde steers to £1860, Friesian steers to £1840, Longhorn steers to £1800, Longhorn heifers to £1790 and Brown Swiss steers to £1700.
