Cast Cattle – Dearer go the cows again as the numbers remain tight, an excellent sale average today of 182ppk and £1201 per head. A high-quality quartet of Limousin cows from A C Simpson & Son, McNeil Farm, Witton-le-Wear ran away with the top spots this week; a fabulous four-year-old sold for 276ppk and £1943, a terrific ten-year-old 238ppk and £1901 but the best of all perhaps was the tremendous thirteen-year-old which led the sale at £1944. Native breed cows peaked at 238ppk and £1447 for the Aberdeen Angus of E A & N Thompson & Son, Bromley Green whilst the pick of the parlour maids were Holstein Friesians from Stainton Hill Farms at 218ppk and F S Sturrock & Sons, Elwick at £1308. Stock bulls topped at 166ppk for a Luing from J P & R Ward, Cragg Top and £1906 for a thumping Charolais shown by M S Foord, Lealholm.

Store Cattle – The store cattle continue at remarkable rates as the feeding firms remain optimistic and clearly short of numbers. Regular supporter Eric Parsons of Newstead Farm, Little Stainton topped the young bulls with a super Simmental at just 9-months-old selling for £1300. A heavy percentage of heifers through this week’s store cattle saw the top price go to an excellent 17-month-old Limousin from C Bell, The Pry, Forest-in-Teesdale when she sold for £1450. Limousins also topped the steers when great DfAM supporter D R Smith, East Roughlea Farm, Ferryhill produced a 20-month-old at £1345. Next week we see our anniversary show and sale which will undoubtedly attract some excellent calves, of the younger beast today, F Ward, Rogerley Hall enjoyed the best returns with 13-month-old steers selling to £1270 and £1265.

Store Sheep – The grass keeps growing so the trade keeps going, as witnessed last week the smaller they are the dearer they look but any value for money is extremely hard to find for the ringside of buyers. A super first draw of Suffolk Mules from A & B Herworth, Crake Scar Farm, Hamsterley led the way when selling to a top of £120; all three pens (100 lambs) from Crake Scar sold in to three figures. Best of the rest were five fine Texel’s from Mrs J and Miss E Boocock, Freebrough Farm, Moorsholm at £117 whilst Beltex topped at £114 from W B Rutter & Sons, Greengill Farm, Scargill. Mule lambs peaked at £94 from D Alderson, Cockleberry, Brignall and horned lambs looked a lively trade with the best a pen of small but bright Blackface from H G Spensley & Son, Sleetburn Farm, Baldersdale at £52. Feeding ewes once again extremely easy to sell, healthy and lean ewes are currently much better sold through the Monday store ring.
