Cast Cattle – Trade remains very strong, a sale containing plenty of flesh but certainly a higher percentage of dairy bred cows (17/54) averaged a pleasing 168 pence per kilo and £1109. A perfect pair of pure Limousin OTM’s from S & J Dent & Son, Great Burdon Farm found themselves a trade equally as hot as the weather when they sold for 268ppk and 254ppk amounting to £1581 and a massive £1696 respectively. Some fabulous milk cows appeared today, no less than 10 sold over £1100 with 9 reaching 170 pence or more however one in particular stood out; a meaty 7-year-old Friesian from R G Swinbank, Breckon Hill Farm reached an impressive 186ppk and £1476. Just the 10 native bred cows today and the leader proved to be a 10-year-old Aberdeen Angus from M & E Webster, Newton Ketton Farm which sold for 176ppk and £1281 whilst our solitary stock bull came from M Barker Farms, Ellerton Abbey who sold a smart 7-year-old Parthanais for 178ppk and a day’s best price of £1787.

Store & Breeding Cattle – A hot day and a trade to match as a typically light harvest time show enjoyed the cooling fans of DFAM and entered the ring fresh and looking well. All classes in high demand as the cattle feeding yards continue to bid in an almost unstoppable fashion. An incredible day for B J Baker of Olives Farm, East Sussex as the long-distance travellers produced some absolutely sublime Limousin’s; a quartet of 15-month-old bulls sold to a top of £1540 with a pen average of £1466, the only bull to mix it up with the Sussex superstars proved to be a strong British Blue from Wilkinson & Son, Carrsides, Rushyford when he split the travelling consignment selling for £1505. The supremacy from the East Sussex firm continued to the store cattle as Messrs Baker produced a fabulous run of Limousin heifers, the pick of them a magical 16-month-old also sold for £1540 with the 8 averaging £1371. Closest in the heifers on the day proved to be a splendid British Blue from High Mains Partnership, Ripon when she sold for £1365 whilst top of our steer list today was a well grown 15-month-old Simmental from Chopwell based A Willey which reached a healthy £1385.
