Darlington Farmers Auction Mart held their weekly sale of cast cattle, store and breeding stock on Monday 16th October 2023. Forward were 382 cattle and 2443 sheep.

Cast Cattle – Trade perhaps a shade easier, far from disastrous though with thirty dairy cows and a further thirty natives the sale still averaged 155ppk and £1033 per head. A hefty Beef Shorthorn cow from W Barron, Morrow Edge led the trade when she sold for £1844. Top per kilo of the week was a super Simmental OTM heifer from C Parker, Newsham Grange which reached 236ppk. As mentioned, plenty of dairy cows to go at this week, top prices went to A Willey of Broomfield Farm, Chopwell when selling Montbeliarde’s to £1329 and Friesian’s to 198ppk. Just the three bulls this week, the best of them proved to be a Stabiliser from M Ewbanks of Kirkby Stephen which sold for 158ppk and £1537.

Store Cattle – Trade this week although still good was perhaps just slightly unpredictable at times, it is very possible that some buyers are sitting tight ahead of next week’s DfAM Great Annual suckled calf sale. The young bulls were in short supply but very easily sold topping at £1400 for a brilliant 10-month-old Limousin from G Calvert & Sons, Keld. Aberdeen Angus claimed the top spots in both heifers and steers as W Denham, Dent Gate produced an excellent 30-month-old heifer at £1400 and regular seller J H Johnson, White Lea Farm sold a cracking trio of steers for £1570.

Store Sheep – Dearer again as a full compliment of buyers battled hammer and tongs to fill their orders. A stunning 180 lambs sold over £100 this week, top of them all at an unbelievable £141 were a pair of massive Charollais lambs from B Cave, Whitehall Farm Cottage; the 111 lambs from this good home averaged over £100. A brilliant run of 79 Texel and Cheviot Mule lambs from K O Stones, Nun Cote Nook claimed the days top average at a massive £110 with a top of £119. The other vendor in the mix at the top was Adam Lowson, Podge Hole Farm with Beltex to top at £121 whilst the 270 Mule lambs averaged over £78 and topped at £90.50 from P Turnbull, West House.
