Breeding Cattle – A big Monday across all sections with some massive returns but the only place that seems fitting to start is with the dispersal of the suckler herd of Heather Marks, Gilly Flatts Farm, Bishopton. A wonderful send off was always on the cards for this special bunch of cattle and a huge gallery of buyers guaranteed them the tremendous trade they so richly deserved; top of the lot was a stunning Limousin heifer with her April born heifer calf at foot when she sold for £4300 to R A & S L Wearmouth, Middletown Farm. The rest of the herd saw the back in calf cows sold separately from their predominantly February and March born calves; top priced cow at £3900 was a phenomenal 2016 born British Blue which was bought by T N Callender, Ox Eye Farm. No less than four other cracking cows followed over £3000 as the eighteen in calf cows averaged an excellent £2707. The fifteen calves each followed their mother under the hammer and they averaged a mesmerising £1309, best of them all was a March born Limousin crossed steer selling for £2050 to F Watson, Sedgefield; incidentally his wonderous 2016 born mother sold for £3650 to J Caldwell, Doncaster. The stock bulls from Gilly Flatts also found new homes with a young British Blue reaching £3450 and a six-year-old Limousin £3050.

Cast Cattle – Bigger numbers forward and signs that Autumn is upon us as a lot more lean cows were in attendance, the green market status helps massively on days like this as all classes remain good to sell and keenly bid for; the sale averaged 161ppk and £1080. A top price per kilo of 278 pence went to Northfield Farms, Bowes with an excellent British Blue OTM heifer. Best older cow of the day came from T N Callender, Ox Eye Farm when a brilliant 920kg Limousin sold for 218ppk and £2005. Of the thirty-three dairy breeds this week it was the Holstein Friesians in the top spots as a youngster from R Tookey & Son sold for 228ppk and a fleshy sort from A R & C Booth led the gross values at £1290. Rare mention must go to the Highland cattle this week as W Young, Cliff House Farm, Whitby sold both OTM heifers and bulls over 200 pence per kilo. Finally to the bulls and it was a successful sale for R A Patterson & Son, White House Farm who topped with their young Limousin at 264 pence but nothing could live in the bull ring with the incredible 1255kg Aberdeen Angus from D A & M A M Brown, Agglethorpe which totted up to a mighty £2409.

Store Cattle – What a time to sell feeding cattle, some staggering returns this week; kicking things off were an excellent show of young bulls largely thanks to a brilliant run of 12 to 17-month-old predominantly British Blonde crosses from the Appleton family, Pudding Poke Farm which topped twice at £1780 and saw their nineteen average £1463. On to the store cattle, take a bow Howard Johnson of White Lea Farm who produced a sublime run of forward Charolais steers. The top pair from White Lea sold for £1990 apiece with fifteen phenomenon’s in the run averaging a stunning £1885. Seldom are the Limousin breed left out of the store cattle top prices and they were rescued today by Hughes Brothers, Sockburn Hall topping the heifer section at £1590 with a smart 22-month-old, just £10 adrift in the heifer race were D & H M Hodgson, Dyke Nook with an excellent British Blue.

Store Sheep – The biggest yarding of sheep so far this season and with it came more travelling buyers, a shortage of the very best lambs combined with 300 Mule’s and 300 Swaledale lambs still left a sale average of a pleasing £80. Top of the trade at £117 were two vendors when ten terrific Beltex from D & M Lowes, Wilson House matched a quartet of tremendous Texel lambs from Tom Bell of Belsay, Newcastle. Suffolks sold to £110 from G W Dobson & Son, Wood Close and the strong Mule’s regularly reached the £80’s. Final mention to the Swaledale lambs and the stand out run came from first time vendors G H & K W Boddy, Hartoft with 169 topping at £50 and averaging £46.44. Feeding ewes remain good if fleshy but the leaner old girls took a drop this week, tops of £139 went to the Texel’s of S Straughan whilst a thumping run of Swaledale’s from T E Dobson, Unthank look well sold as the fifty-seven of them full of flesh averaged £54.
