Darlington Farmers Auction Mart held their weekly sale of Cast Cows, Store & Breeding Stock on Monday 4th April 2022. Forward were 272 Cattle and 78 Sheep.

Cast Cattle – Yet again the cast beef sold at incredible levels, almost half of those forward this week left the milking parlour to attend with the remainder split evenly between continental and native breed beef animals; in short, quality was hard to come by yet the fantastic returns really do almost beggar belief. Top price per kilo came from S Beeforth of Chop Gate with a tidy British Blue OTM selling for 218 pence, close behind came our leading older cow a 10 year old Limousin cross from R G & G Rutter of Hamsterley at 216 pence. The Limousin’s struck again with the top gross valued female as a fleshy 6 year old from G W Dobson & Son, South Wingate climbed as high as £1772, chasing her was our top native a hefty Hereford from W & R Kemp & Son, St Helens Auckland at an impressive £1730, the top native female per kilo came from Gallaw Hill Farm, Broomley and Messrs M E & T D Tailford with a sumptuous Beef Shorthorn at 200 pence. Some delighted dairy farmers today as the leaner meat continues to absolutely fly to levels never seen before, leading the charge were Baysleap Dairy Farm of Heddon on the Wall with a consignment peaking at 194 pence per kilo and £1372 on a day which witnessed countless ex milkers the top side of 170 pence. Finally to the stock bulls and a monumental trade for all, a fine Friesian from R & W Todd of Toft Hill impressed at 200ppk and £1956 as did a smart 14 year old Limousin from B Watson, Baal Hill Farm reaching 214ppk and £1938 however the day belonged to a beefy giant. Some 1406kg of Aberdeen Angus bull from J Elliot, Mickleton sold for an incredible 166 pence per kilo returning an awesome gross value of £2333.

Store Cattle – Another hum-dinging store beast trade, all classes, sizes, breeds and ages are very much sought after as the prime beef boom of late filters fast and freely down in to the store ring. This week’s best was a beautiful 2 year old Limousin heifer from R C Raper & Daughters of Grange Farm Cottage, Doncaster which sold for a mighty £1490. Store steers sold to a top of £1340 from G Beadle, Winston whilst mention also at this point must go to strong Friesian steers from R & W Todd, Toft Hill at an impressive £1230. Of the younger grass bound cattle a good day was had by all, a packet of square Aberdeen Angus yearling steers from regular sellers G W & M Singleton & Sons, Farlington averaged a tasty £1146 whilst several vendors showed smart continental suckled calves to sell £1100 to £1250 with great regularity. Anyone witnessing the Thursday prime bull trade recently will naturally understand fully the excellent feeding bull trade at the moment, this weeks best bull a terrific 14 month old British Blue cross from T L Holmes & Son, Craghead reached £1440.

Store Sheep – The store hoggs are now sweeping up after their closing ceremony, new life instantly appears from the wings as our first ewes and lambs of the season were in attendance; tidy Texel crossed ewes with twins at foot from W K & J M Walker & Sons, Kirby Hill sold to average £70 per life.
