Darlington Farmers Auction Mart held their weekly sale of Cast Cattle, Store and Breeding Stock on Monday 12th April 2021. Forward were 365 Cattle and 293 Sheep.

Cast Cattle – The cattle trade continues to find gears which we never knew existed, a staggering average today of 162 pence per kilo and £1127 as for the 3rd week running the DFAM average gross value record is broken, some fabulous cows were offered, first mention though goes to the bulls. Topping the sale today was a fantastic three and a half year old Limousin bull from I M Maughan, New Hall Farm which weighed 955kg and sold for a massive 234 pence per kilo and £2234, another Limousin bull on the day also topped £2000 with the other bulls also a fine trade with a 1200kg Charolais totting up to £1849 and a fine Hereford to £1564; the four bulls offered then averaged an insane 182ppk and £1879. Not for the first time in Darlington leading the cows today was one of our welcome regular raiders from the North as the renowned Longhirst Herd of Limousin’s provided us with an absolutely astonishing pen, Messrs J E Jordon & Son, The Brocks sold 4 cows to average 211ppk and £1656 with tops of 234 pence and £1802. Some incredible values were again witnessed throughout as 200 pence is no longer out of the ordinary in the cow ring, of the Native breeds today a young Aberdeen Angus from J F Harland, Old Lodge Farm impressed at 204 pence as did another Angus, this one a 5 year old from G Te-Lintelo, Wolsingham reaching £1445. Top of the Friesians today were C N & P Penk, Pitfield Farm at a whopping 192ppk whilst a well fleshed cow from B Williamson, Marsfield Farm led the black and whites per head at £1190.

Store & Breeding Cattle – For those with store cattle to sell this Spring the sale report is again today, for you, absolutely wonderful news; for those looking to purchase cattle the news is however perhaps less appealing. Starting at the top with some strong stores and some incredible values, a handsome 2 year old Aberdeen Angus steer from G A & C Jopling of Eastgate House Farm, Weardale sold for £1545, further steers today in the top flight came from H Walton & Son, Brass Castle Farm as the buyers of short keepers keep their foot on the accelerator. No less than 8 heifers today sold the top side of £1300, amazingly the top 3 all hailed from one home as R C Raper & Daughters of Tickhill, Doncaster produced a perfect trio of pure Limousins to average £1501 with a top of £1540. Further strong heifers from the Gibson’s of Etherley, Anderson’s, Burnt Houses and Dromonby Bridge Farm could all in their own right duly have topped any sale on another week. Younger grass cattle remain a blinding trade, smart runs of yearling s from M Gallon (4 av.£1200) J & M J Walton (3 av. £1148) F Hickson & Sons (9 av. £1120) T L Holmes & Son (6 av.£1119) J J M Lonsdale (4 av. £1081) and F H Hutchinson (8 av. £1063) were all well worthy of mention. The young bull trade was again fast, the top 17 bulls today all between 9 and 13 months all sold beyond £1100, the leader was a beauty from F Hickson & Sons, Homilton Farm at a wonderful £1395, seven from the Capheaton based outfit averaged a fabulous £1300 closely followed by local producers D & P H Brown with a trio averaging £1280. Half a dozen cows and calves opened the show today selling well to a top twice of £1880 from Dromonby Bridge Farm with their 7 year old Charolias cows complimented by their 2 week old heifer calves at foot.

Store & Breeding Sheep – Store hoggs remain a tidy trade whilst the feeding ewes are rising fast to keep up with the upwards spiralling cast sheep trade. Attention now however naturally turns to ewes and lambs, given the wonderful year the sheep prices have enjoyed few are surprised to see the trade for the new lives on a high. Topping the sale today were Northfield Farms with a fabulous turn out of Beltex and Texel crosses which averaged them a very tidy £130 per life reaching a top of £280 for a nice shearling with a super single lamb at foot. Top of the Mule ewes today were a pen of aged ewes all suckling twins, they sold for a healthy £216 per family.
