Cast Cattle – Another healthy show, trade slightly short of last weeks unprecedented levels however a sale average of 157 pence per kilo and over £1100 was again more than satisfactory. To the top slots in a moment however this week we start with the dairy cattle which represented 17% of those offered today, incredibly the parlour princesses averaged over 133ppk, a figure certainly helped as a truly amazing 190ppk was achieved by a smart young Friesian from Stainton Hill Farms, Streatlam whilst the top gross valued Friesian from J T Forster & Son, Killerby Farm reached an outstanding £1303. On a day which saw 7 cattle sell beyond 200ppk and 38 reach beyond £1200 the top two were indeed special sorts, firstly a fabulous 7 year old Limousin from T Coulthard & Son, Smith House Farm set the bar high when she sold for 220ppk and a huge £1916, bettering her per kilo was an absolutely wonderful 37 month old British Blue heifer from K O Stones, Nun Cote Nook; we are never surprised by a little bit of magic from Marrick and this girl was no exception when she sold for a whopping 232ppk and £1897. The native breeds were again well represented making up 14% of the sale, showing them the way this week was a huge lump of an Aberdeen Angus cow from B & M J Garbutt, Bagdale Farm which sold for an incredible £1623; the stock bull race was won by D & H M Hodgson, Dyke Nook with a smart 4 year old Limousin selling for 178ppk and £1899, the only other bull today was a remarkable outwintered 13 year old Limousin from A M Walton, Newbiggin-in-Teesdale realizing 156ppk and £1447.

Store Cattle – A two tier atmosphere again as the vendors remain over the moon whilst some of the buyers look bemused by the whole affair, no doubting the cattle remain £100 to £200 dearer on the year and 99% of the producers are incredibly pleased this Spring. A red letter day for the Aberdeen Angus this week as they stole the show, the first instalment of black magic came from last weeks runaway winners G A & C Jopling of Eastgate when their strong 23 month old steer sold for £1470, right on his tail were the Aberdeen Angus again as a pair of humongous 32 month old heifers from G & J H Tomlinson & Son, Knitsley sold for £1465. Away from the strong beast some really classy runs of grass cattle were on offer, half a dozen super British Blue yearling heifers from T L Holmes & Son, Craghead impressed reaching £1255 and averaging £1129 whilst the Eastgate flag was flying again when six superstars from W Wearmouth & Son saw the lovely run of 10 month old black Limousin heifers peak twice at £1215 and average £1127. With Thursday’s bull trades of late flying there is little wonder that the replacements take some buying, top price paid was £1350 for a lovely 21 month old Limousin, the impressive stats today showing 15 bulls over £1100 of which a dozen were under 12 months old. Plenty of life in the cow and calf trade as impressive returns went home with Dromonby Bridge Farm and new vendor to DFAM J W Fieldson.
