Darlington Farmers Auction Mart held their weekly sale of Cast Cattle, Store and Breeding Stock on Monday 24th January 2022. Forward were 335 Cattle and 576 Sheep.

Cast Cattle – A show with less quality however numbers good and plenty of flesh on many of those offered left another impressive trade and a super sale average of 133ppk, the milkers were on manoeuvre and the natives were numerous this week with the breakdown 36% native, 28% dairy and 36% continental. Top of the sale was a tremendous Limousin OTM from T W Clark & Son, Frankland Park Farm which sold for a splendid 210ppk and £1402, hot on her tail was our leading native a fantastic Shorthorn OTM heifer from Mayfield Beef Shorthorns, Leazes Farm at 190ppk and £1301. The Friesian trade was outstanding, an OTM from I F & C M Herring & Son, Halnaby Grange sold for 178ppk whilst the top gross value was a beauty from S H Watson & Son, Station Farm, Winston which tipped the scales to a massive 1019kg and returned a gross value of a whopping £1283. Just the four stock bulls this week, the top price of 150ppk was shared between a Limousin from K B & S Roche, Fylingdales and a Salers from Allison Devereux Farms, Firtree; the Salers weighed a touch heavier and therefore was our leading gross valued bull at £1368.

Store Cattle – The relentless beef boom continues, as the professional feeders become so very used to the impressive returns for finished cattle so the store producers seem to benefit week in week out. Best of the feeding bulls today a majestic pure Limousin from American Squeeze Crush, Burneston which sold for an amazing £1580, behind him a superb 14-month-old British Blue from I & R A Watson, West Hinedon at a healthy £1285. Leading the store cattle was an exceptional 20-month-old Limousin heifer from L Kidd, Strathmore Arms Farm which sold for £1340, close behind were also Limousin’s from R Ormston, Wardell House Farm which twice sold in to the high £1200’s. The day’s top 3 steers all came from local dairy farmers R & W Todd of High Toft Hill Farm; they sold a Limousin cross for £1295 and a pair of Aberdeen Angus reached £1285.

Store Hoggs – Absolutely off the clock again, all shapes and sizes in attendance and buyers still very keen to bid freely. No doubting the sale toppers as a brilliant run of Beltex from W Ramsay & Sons, Blakeley Hill Farm set the place alight peaking at £137 with the 26 of them averaging over £126. Another remarkable day with over 200 lambs selling the top side of £100 and a sale average which naturally now includes some sweepings up of over £95, in conclusion, there has possibly never been a better time to sell store hoggs. The feeding ewes are also a top trade, the market for mutton on both Monday’s and Thursday’s is very strong of late.
