Cast Cattle – Trade easier than witnessed of late, the labour shortage within the industry seems to be nipping a little across the nation and whilst the pigs are the primary sufferers it was noticeable today that some of the beef boning plants may sadly be following suit. The sale average of 121 pence per kilo is by no means disastrous and all firms were represented although their buyers weren’t carrying just as much ammunition. Top of the tree was a fantastic 4 year old Limousin heifer from G K, K N & G J Hird of Meadow View, Richmond when she sold for 220 pence per kilo, leading the gross values was another Limousin, this one a well fed 5 year old from W A Wardman Ltd, Thrushwood Farm, Yearby realised £1404. The pick of the Native breeds today was a smart Aberdeen Angus from R E Dickson, Stubdale Farm, Loftus when she sold for 184ppk and £1120 whilst the Holstein Friesian’s were led by D Walker, High Woddifield Farm East at 170ppk and £1132. Just the three retiring stock bulls offered this week and as with the cows the Limousin breed took the top two slots as T & R Quinn, Quarry House Farm reached £1241 and R Carnaffen, High Strothers Farm 154ppk.

Store & Breeding Cattle – Ten cows and calves kicked off proceedings and trade proved good once again, leading the line was a superb 10 year old Limousin Cow with a tidy 3 month old bull calf at foot from L J Thompson, Ripon Drive, Willington when she sold for £1780; close behind at the tender age of 15 years came another Limousin at £1650, this faithful servant with heifer calf at foot came from L Booton, Manor Farm, Thornton Steward. The young bulls followed and were led by a great pair of yearling Limousins from J R & A R Wall, Raygill Farm, Lartington, the best of these two reached an impressive £1215. The better bred and stronger stores continue in scintillating form, some of the plainer sellers this week looked more buyable however that’s coming off the back of an awesome spell and in reality the cattle all remain a superb trade. Nobody could doubt our leader as a majestic 18 month old black Limousin steer from R W Ridley, Tongue Hill, Hurst sold for a brilliant £1680, the quality Tongue Hill quartet today left with all four leading prices. Leading the heifer trade today was another 18 month old Limousin, an absolute peach on this occasion hailing from Temperance Farm, Marske and the good home of R Simpson & Sons sold for £1245.
