Cast Cattle – A much plainer show than recently, although back on paper to 142ppk, cow trade would be equally as fast as we have seen of late, if anything perhaps even dearer. Top price per kilo was a smart Limousin OTM from C & R Metcalf, Park House Farm, Barningham when she sold for 212 pence; close behind her was the star of the week as a magnificent 8 year old 826kg Limousin cow from S Wilde, Spite Winter House, Sheffield sold for 206 pence per kilo and a marvellous £1701. A nice show of Native breeds was led by a smart Longhorn from G A Willey, Chopwell at 190ppk and a fleshy Aberdeen Angus from J D & G Hugill, Faceby at £1371. The retiring milk cows were again in high demand as again the Willey’s of Chopwell sold a 7 year old Montbelliarde to 164ppk and £1382, Holstein Friesian cows peaked at 150ppk and £1238 from R G Swinbank, Sedgefield. Top priced stock bull was a 1033kg 7 year old Charolais from P Foster of Glaisdale when he sold for 138ppk and £1425.

Store & Breeding Cattle – An absolutely outstanding trade today, the recent beef boom has thrown some hot returns our way of late however this week’s could easily be the best yet. A huge 27 month old Limousin steer from M L Tallentire, Butterknowle led the way when he sold for £1520 with a beautiful 16 month old Limousin from D W Dresser, Greatham following closely behind. More plaudits for the beast from Butterknowle as the Tallentire pen also produced our top four heifers, the pick a 25 month old Limousin at £1460. A clean sweep for the Limousin breed as G M Elstob, Deighton sold a 12 month old young bull to £1415 and Middleton-in-Teesdale’s J McLaughlin had earlier sold a 6 year old Limousin cow and calf to £1650.

Store Lambs – A super sale average of over £80 as the better bred lambs were in huge demand, a noticeable interest around the tight skinned shapely lambs however some of the smaller lambs would see no price rise at all on the week. Top price was a fantastic Beltex lamb from J Davis, Butterknowle selling to £125, bidding reached 3 figures on 8 other occasions. Strong lambs traded typically £85 to £95 with the long keepers £68 to £78, the best of our Mule store lambs this week were regularly selling between £74 and £84.
