Darlington Farmers Auction Mart held a special sale of In Lamb Ewes in conjunction with their weekly sale of Cast Cattle, Store Stock and Prime Sheep on Monday 15th February 2021. Forward were 610 Cattle and 1049 Sheep.

Cast Cattle – The remarkable beef trade rolls along merrily, a light show of cows met an eager ringside of buyers which resulted in a sensational average today of 146 pence per kilo and £989 per head. Top price per kilo was a beautiful 6 year old British Blue cow all the way from Andrew Geary, Yew Tree Farm, Milton Keynes which reached an incredible 228 pence per kilo and £1534; the impressive gross value from the Milton Keynes man was only bettered once as an 9 year old British Blue from J Gilson, The Heugh, Quebec sold for a terrific £1581. Cows of all shapes and sizes were very easily sold and a fair day for the good folk of Quebec continued as the black and whites peaked at a wonderful 178ppk for a youngster from R & S Bradley, the top gross value of the 16 dairy cows today a strong Holstein from Redgate Dairy Farm, Wisbech, Lincolnshire at £1106. The native breeds were also in on the act as both Shorthorn’s and Hereford’s climbed well in to the 140’s, the biggest of them a well fleshed Shorthorn from Fristling Hall Farm, Essex reached an impressive £1164 as this good home sold 18 cows to average 150ppk and £1109.

Store Cattle – The trade goes from strength to strength with all classes moving seemingly effortlessly through the gears, a strong offering of cattle were battled hard for by numerous buyers operating on behalf of an amazing 53 active accounts. Top of the shop was a wonderful 15 month old Limousin heifer from B R Lawson of Buddle House, Whashton when she sold for a sublime £1420, an outstanding eight heifers from Buddle House averaged a stratospheric £1239. An incredible achievement today as the top 19 priced steers all belonged to Fristling Hall Farm, Essex; the excellent run of 216 stores peaked twice at £1410 with both a Simmental and a South Devon whilst the whole consignment levelled at a wonderful £1046. The young bull trade was very sharp from start to finish, some tremendous returns for all vendors, none more so than those achieved by John Clayton, Bentley Farm, Bradford with his top three 11 month old Limousin’s scooping gold, silver and bronze at £1170, £1140 and £1115.

In Lamb Ewes – The sheep gift keeps on giving, the in lamb ewes then sold to unprecedented levels, amazing demand throughout as a new DfAM centre record was set by the prolific Stones family of Nun Cote Nook Farm, Marrick. A beautiful pure Texel shearling scanned carrying twins due next month to the Texel sold for a wonderful £550, her stable mate before of the same description her sold for £500 whilst the 3rd member of the Stones pen a North Country Cheviot shearling scanned with a single sold for £400. Away from the super singles the Weardale contingency enjoyed a fine day with Frosterley best represented, a tremendous trio of Texels from M Dent sold for £230 whilst some very strong Mule ewes carrying triplets from F Ward, Rogerley Hall looked very well sold at £175.

Store Hoggs – A dozen delightful Texel tup hoggs from T Common & Son, Low Ardley, Hexham whipped the buyers into a frenzy, a sensational average of £177.50 with the top trio selling for a mind boggling £250 apiece, all credit must go to the vendors with what was without doubt a great run of shearling makers. Leading the store lamb trade at a wonderful £140 was J Hird of Thornley Close Farm, Norton as their run of 17 averaged an almost ridiculous £132; the whole show of lambs today averaged over £100 as the sheep vendors continue on an incredible high.

Prime Hoggs & Ewes – A very light show, the sale average of 264ppk and £115 was certainly healthy again with an SQQ average of 273ppk. Top price per kilo headed down Bilsdale to D Easton of Low Ewecote Farm with a beautiful single 42kg Beltex selling for 309 pence (£130), the gross value’s today rounded off a great day for the Common’s of Low Ardley as they twice sold top trio’s of Texel’s to £142. The cast ewe trade chugs along nicely, the peak today £129 from regular supporter W A Wardman, Yearby.
