1846 Prime Lambs sold to 346ppk or £145
481 Cast Ewes & Rams sold to £162
Prime Lambs (1846) – The lamb trade today resembled a turkey sandwich, still alright but not as tasty as it was last week. As in the previous 51 weeks all the lambs over our bridge were weighed straight and averaged today 241ppk with an SQQ of 245ppk. Out in front per kilo at a whopping 346 pence were a quality quartet of Beltex from W Ramsay & Sons, Wingate which sold to Yorkshire Halal, Keighley; best of the rest after his honourable mention in the ewe ring last week was the Durham dipsomaniac William Tindale. This week the gross values reached £145 on three occasions, firstly a fantastic five Texel’s weighing 56kg from Richard Bailes, Cole Hill Farm, Elwick which sold to Roots Farm Shop, East Rounton; they were twice matched at £145 by trios of belting Beltex from the excellent Askwiths of Crook which headed to Castlebank Butchers and J A Jewitt Ltd respectively. Heavyweight pens from A C Simpson & Son, Witton-le-Wear joined in the photo finish and twice sold to £144 on a day which saw 22 pens of lambs sell beyond £130.

Cast Ewes & Rams (481) – The ewe trade signed off 2022 in good form, a leaner show averaged a pleasing £82. Top of the pile was P J Tindale, Shadforth with an excellent Charollais tup reaching £162. On a day which saw over 100 ewes reach £100 or more it was perhaps the heavy Mule’s which enjoyed the biggest lift, top of the breed from W A Wardman Ltd, Yearby sold for £128 with plenty of the popular breed this week nicely into three figures. For the second week running it was a Commondale consignor topping the horned ewes, today’s star turns a terrific trio of Blackface from L W Martin, Wayworth Farm at £82.
