Clean Cattle (188) – Following the storm witnessed last week the lull appeared today, if the impeccable and almost immortal scenes in our cattle ring hadn’t happened 7 days ago then todays trade would have looked reasonably good with heifers averaging 242ppk, alas, what goes up it appears must come down. Four smart heifers today sold over 280 pence as a pair of Limousin’s from the super consistent R Hirst, Neasham (281p&282p) joined a British Blue from J Mills & Son, Winwick (286p) however none could catch a real eye-catching Limousin from N White, Barf House, Marrick as she set the pace at 288 pence per kilo. Topping the steers per kilo was a shapely British Blue from W A Armstrong, Coxhoe at 266 pence per kilo closely followed by another Blue at 260ppk, the pick of a run up from East Anglian Trailers, Essex. The gross value race this week went to three superb Limousin steers from Durham based MJ & EA Sedgewick with a best of £1920; best of the heifers a cracker from regular top performer B Walker, Dalton-on-Tees at £1636. Lots of native and dairy breeds today again throughout the sale, impressing was a hefty Friesian heifer from J M Stuart & Son across from Pretson, Lancashire at £1551 whilst a host of native heifers found homes with ease.

Prime Lambs (2036) – As the week has transpired the sheep nationally have dipped, none the less if at lambing time we had been offered during the last week in July a sale average of 234ppk and £99, we would very likely have taken it. A bare skinned Beltex superstar from regular sellers H T Davies & Partners, Bolam led the way when the 41 kilograms of perfection sold for 300ppk and £123. A mighty showing from Northumberland today were always going to challenge for the top slots, great runs from several consignors with an NE postcode were eventually topped by B A Swallow of Hexham reaching £131. Competitive returns again in Darlington this week, even on a falling trade, we still witnessed 30 pens of sheep sell beyond 260 pence per kilo and 23 times bidding reached at least £120, cast our memory back one year and the sale leaders were delighted to reach 255ppk and £118.50.
