Darlington Farmers Auction Mart held their weekly sale of Cast Cattle, Breeding Stock, Store Stock, Prime Lambs and Cast Ewes on Monday 2nd August 2021. Forward were 326 Cattle and 798 Sheep.

Cast Cattle – The cow vendors were enjoying life again as the returns today defied belief, a sale average of 156ppk with 6 selling over 200ppk and a dozen others between 180ppk and 199ppk. Some 15 cattle sold beyond £1300 as the whole show averaged nicely beyond £1000. The top per kilo today was a superb 6 year old British Blue from K O Stones of Nun Cote Nook, Marrick when she sold for 218 pence; with a gross value of £1619 the Nun Cote cow was beaten only once as a hefty Simmental cow from Fristling Hall Farm, Essex led the way at an impressive £1720. The native breeds were out in force again, the pick of the indigenous species this week came from P D Shepherd, High Conniscliffe as they produced a 7 year old South Devon at £1534 and an Aberdeen Angus OTM at 210ppk. More delights this week for the milk maids as they peaked at £1111 from Little Newsham Farms and 150ppk from R & A Chapman, Great Ayton. Stock bulls this week were in short supply, just the one forward, a fleshy Shorthorn from T A & J Swinbank, High House, Brafferton sold well at 174ppk and £1578

Store Cattle – Trade easier, the unimaginable levels witnessed last week were not maintained however still the store beast sell well for the time of year. Top of the sale today a magnificent Aberdeen Angus steer from R Welford & Sons, Roxby selling for £1480 closely followed by a pair of lovely Limousin steers from East Anglian Trailers, Essex which sold for an exceptional £1440. Three of the top four heifers today came from A & Proctor, Swarland Old Hall, Morpeth with their superb run of 20-23 month old Limousin’s peaking at £1420, credit must go to all the heifer producers as 40 sold today at £1000 or better. Young bulls again sold well with a varied display before us; the gold medal was shared between two Limousin’s as a 16 month old from T T Hall & Son, Evenwood and a 9 month old from W H Brown, Grinton both sold for £1325.

Store Lambs – With the prime trade dipping nationally the store trade is naturally easier, thus said a nice show left a very pleasing sale average of over £78 with 8 pens at £90 plus a further 250 lambs selling £80-£90. Top price went to some fantastic Beltex from R W Dalton, Romaldkirk at £95 followed by 3 strong sells from J W & B Firby, Brafferton. Completing those in the £90 club were Texel’s from both L D Laws, Hauxwell and J Wigham, Butterknowle with Mule lambs from S Beeforth, Chop Gate also joining in.

Prime Lambs & Cast Ewes – Very few forward, a pleasing sale average of 231ppk and £104.10 would indeed rival anywhere in the region today. Top of the sale at 244ppk and £116.50 were some exceptional Charollais lambs from P Shepherd of High Conniscliffe. Leading the handful of ewes was a smart Texel tup from I & A Holmes of Elwick at £132.
