The black and white bulls this week were a varied bunch; top price per kilo came from J E & B Morgan & Sons, Bishop Middleham selling for 189 pence whilst the top 3 gross valued Friesian’s all came from the brilliant feeding of R Hall & Son, Kilton Hall, Brotton with a peak of £1221 and the 3 on the trailer averaging £1189. Clean Cattle (103) – Another fine trade, perhaps a fraction behind the past two weeks extreme levels however the beef boom remains well and truly switched on. Heifers this week average a marvellous 254 pence per kilo and for the third week running the strong steers forced their way up and over £2000. A fierce battle for the top slot this week broke out between two terrific breeders and feeders from Northumberland, the buyers couldn’t split them and therefore a tie at 286 pence per kilo was the fairest way to settle things between a magical 588kg British Blue from W J Scott Ltd, Low Leam and a 520kg Limousin from J & A Moralee, Hardriding Farm. The  Top gross value was for the third week running awarded to the heavyweight steers of Barker Farming Partnership, Scorton as they again smashed through the £2000 barrier, the leading gross valued heifer was another superstar from Team Low Leam as a beautiful British Blonde was the only female on the day to sell beyond £1800. Some delightful steers today were led per kilo by the familiar face of J L Marks, Bishopton as they sold a smart Limousin for 262 pence per kilo; plenty of the other better fed and better bred bullocks today comfortably selling in the 230’s, 40’s and 50’s. As is customary some of the leading names of the day are listed below.

Prime Lambs (1720) – A larger show followed the national trend and sold at reduced values, a sale average of 285ppk and £116.43 however keeps us some 60 pence per kilo ahead of the corresponding week last year. The best lambs remain in demand, those noticeably drawing their sheep lighter and leaner to catch the fast trade will hold their breath over the coming weeks and months to see if their decision proves to be the right one. Top price today came from Keith Metcalf of J K & C E Farming, Piercebridge with a lovely 47kg lamb which sold for 361 pence per kilo and £170, the lamb was purchased by Eve Worsley of Worsley Wholesale and proceeds will be kindly donated to Cancer Research UK, many thanks to all concerned for their generosity. The best lambs today typically sold at £140 and beyond with most vendors remaining £20-£30 ahead on the year, production costs have risen and the excellent start to 2021 is both needed and deserved by the lamb finishers, the dip in trade was certainly expected as the numbers now pour forward, may it be a shallow and short lived dip.
