Prime Bulls (125) – A plainer show than of late, all buyers present however most were noticeably just slightly pressing the brake pedal in comparison to last week’s flyer as the bull trade followed the slight downward turn as seen nationally, thus said some handsome returns as a even on a slight downturn Darlington remains right at the forefront averaging 208.72ppk. Leading the charge at 251 pence per kilo were A C Simpson & Son, McNeil Farm with a typically shapely pure Limousin from this prolific home, the McNeil quartet of bulls today averaged a wonderful 240ppk and £1865. Another top regular feeder today found the way to the top of the gross value podium as D Richardson & Co of Bracken House turned out a superb heavyweight Limousin which reached £1892; 15 toppers from this home averaged 220ppk and £1710. As is often the case some familiar names rose to the top with A G Watson & Sons, Nunstainton Grange; T W Clark & Son, Frankland Park and J W Holmes & Son, Chestnut Farm pushed the leaders all the way. An increased offering of dairy and dairy crossed bulls today were very easily sold provided they carried flesh, some 32 Holstein Friesians were included; a brut of a Holstein from M A & P D Foster, Smithy House sold to £1348 whilst an old fashioned Friesian from R Hall & Son, Kilton Hall reached the dizzy heights of 211 pence per kilo.

Clean Cattle (201) – Credit to the vendors as they all braved the snow to attend, a pleasing show of 200 clean beast were certainly a mixed offering with something for everyone and more importantly someone for everything. The heavyweight U grade cattle enjoyed the trade of the day with perhaps even a slight increase, the butchers heifers and the R and U grades would be marginally easier than the high levels set last week. Top price per kilo made the early morning snow clearing worthwhile for G & J Y Marshall of Message Farm, Spaunton, North Yorkshire when they topped the pence per kilo with a sweet British Blonde heifer at 271 pence, the expertly finished 518kg heifer was pleasingly a product of our store ring when she was bought from Andrew Wilson, Calf Close Farm last year. Top grossing heifer completed a successful day for the Simpson’s at McNeil Farm when a beautiful 751kg homebred Limousin amassed an impressive return of £1802; four super heifers from McNeil averaged £1668. Top priced steer per kilo was another product of our store sales, bought from N S Harvey, Lincolnshire by M Robinson & Sons, Staindrop back in August the terrific British Blue steer sold for 251 pence per kilo. Top grossing steer today came from one of our many Northumberland raiders D Robson & Sons, Merryshields Farm, Capheaton with a smart British Blue amounting to £1670; mention must go again to some of our top contenders…

W J Scott Ltd, West Woodburn sold 8 Heifers to average 249ppk and £1569

PJ & ES Rogerson, Appleby sold 2 Heifers to average 263ppk and £1441

B Walker, Dalton-on-Tees sold 3 Heifers to average 247ppk and £1503
