Bulls – On a week when a lot of English farmers are traveling North of the border for The Highland Show, quite a few Scottish farmers were doing the opposite, heading South through the night with their stock to take advantage of some premium prices. Trade in general was slightly up on the week for all types. Top of the Border raiders for bulls was WM Dick & Sons, Mains of Thorsk whose consignment of 6 quality Limousin Bulls – which included amongst these the lead grossing price of £2356 averaged 240ppk & £2137. The best price ppk however went to just South of the Border to Northumberland Farmers WJ Scott Ltd, Low Leam who sold a British Blue to 267ppk & £1909 purchased by JA Jewitt Ltd. A special mention also for a 10-year-old British Blue stock bull sold by R Dobie & Co, South Cassingray which went on to sell for £2223.

Clean Cattle – Not just the quality forward of recent weeks, a lot more weight about too, trade would be very similar for heifers, there was an increase in demand however for steers with once again another Northumberland farmer, RA&BA Ridley & Son Ltd, Dipton Foot Farm top the lead grossing beast with a Limousin Steer which sold to Worsley’s for £2001 helping his consignment of 8 Steers average £1850. JV&JA Hodgson, The Grange topped the market at 311ppk for a Limousin Heifer which realised £1741 and was purchased by Taylors, Darlington.

Lambs – Trade as expected easier on the week, demand for quality was still good, as seen with JC Simpson, Hill Top East, his consignment of 96 quality lambs averaged 253ppk & £149.59 amongst these was the top price lambs of 366ppk purchased for £154 by Castlebank Butchers and the lead grossing lambs which also sold to Castlebank Butchers for £161.50. There was a single lamb Kindly Donated by JK&CE Farming, Blue House Farm in aid of Cancer Research which sold for a fantastic 1282ppk & £500 generously purchased by Yorkshire Halal Meat Suppliers.

Hoggs – Just a handful of hoggs forward the average price of 189ppk probably reflecting quite well the quality forward. 1 Hogg which was kindly donated by N&A Hunter; Woodlands Farm sold to Yorkshire Halal for £130 with all proceeds going to The North East Air Ambulance Service.

Cast Ewes & Rams (489) – Firstly, we would like to say a huge thankyou to G Pickering of Thackside farm, for his generosity this afternoon when selling two texel ewes and a texel ram for an amazing £320 a head, rasing an incredible £960 total for his chosen charity, the Parkinson’s charity.

Ewes this week may have averaged slightly lower, but trade is still keeping on track at an averaged price of £103. With a good show of sheep through the mart today, the warm weather is obviously bringing out the best in our sheep farmers. Top prices at £320 from G Pickering for the parkinsons charity, was followed by AS&SM Kemp of Whitwell farm, with their ram selling for a great price of £190. With ewe trade maintaining itself well, 5 cracking texel ewes made £166 for JC Simpson of Hill top East, which is sure to keep morals high.
