Cast Cattle – Showing no sign of slowing down, the geld cow trade continues to be nothing short of electrifying – week in and week out the demand for the old girls and boys continues to astound everyone. Although there was a very diverse show of cull cattle forward the market average still came back at 182ppk for cows and an even better 193ppk for bulls. Top of the tree at 246ppk was a young Blonde D’Aquitaine Heifer sold by E Wilson White Hills. The 38-month-old realised a very tasty £1658.
The number 1 spot for the top grossing beast went to an 8-year-old Limousin Bull weighing in at 1160kg & 212ppk returning an impressive £2459 for his owner J Layfield, Nackshivan.
Leading the way for the highest grossing cows were 2 Shorthorns from the home of Mr Tennant, Stoneygate Farm which sold to a top price of £1896 av £1719, whilst an Aberdeen Angus cow from RE Dickson, Stubdale Farm weighing just short of a tonne, sold for £1873 completing a clean swoop for the native breeds at the top end of the table. In the dairy section it was a tie for the top price of 178ppk between Little Newsham Farms & Wilkinson, Carrsides returning at £1238 & £1180 respectively.

Store Cattle – Due to the current sunny weather conditions and the need to ‘make hay while the sun shines’, our smallest show of store cattle forward for some considerable time. Trade and demand however remain strong especially if you take into account the extra costs involved in producing fat cattle. A varied show of store bulls saw T&DI Allen, Chatterley Farm sell 5 bulls to average £1187 with a top price of £1355. In the store cattle department RF Gill & Sons, Colliery Farm’s 2 Blonde D’Aquitaine Steers were top of the leader board at £1335 closely followed by F Ward, Rogerley’s Limousin Steer at £1320. C Dawson of Nunstainton was just ahead in the heifers with a 28mth British Blue selling for £1290, closely followed by RF Gill & Sons Blonde D’Aquitaine heifer at £1265.
