Cast Cows – Week in and week out our report seems to read ‘you have to see the trade to believe it’ and ‘unbelievable’ – ‘dearer than ever’ is another superlative that’s been used a lot in recent weeks, well today you could use any or all of them phrases to describe an absolutely phenomenal trade. A whole market average of 174ppk, including over a third of the entries being Dairy Bred, whether it be Limousin or Longhorn Stabiliser or Shorthorn trade can only be described as being ‘Out of this world’ Darlington Auction Mart require more cows on a weekly basis and can guarantee top prices for all weights and grades. A top price of 242 ppk was reached for a Young Blonde Heifer which realised £1631 – part of a consignment of 4 which travelled from Cumbria averaging a tasty 206ppk & £1454 for vendor PJ&ES Rogerson, Great Asby. Local producer JC Johnson, Beanley Carr Farm sold the lead grossing cow-a 12-year-old Limousin that realised £1751 while the lead grossing cast bull was a 5-year-old Limousin from T Common & Son, Low Ardley weighing in at just over a tonne the hammer fell at just short of 200ppk leaving him to add up to just nicely over £2000. Top of the Dairy Tree at 186ppk was AR&C Booth, Bolton-on-Swale whose trio of Friesians averaged 174ppk & £1122 and N&AD Brass & Son, Ox Close Farm led the way with the lead grossing Dairy cow, a Friesian which sold for £1480 – staying with the Dairy breeds A Willey, Broomfield Farm had a consignment of 9 Montbeliarde cows straight out of the parlour at 5.30 this morning averaged 171ppk & £1354.

Store Cattle – Trade still incredibly strong although there was quite a mixed show of store cattle forward, including a high percentage of Native Breeds. T&DI Allen & Son, Chatterley did the double quite nicely achieving the top price for bulls and heifers respectively.  A Limousin steer sold by A&MJ Henshaw was the top price on the day at £1525 part of a quality consignment from Mainsgill Farm. A run of strong Steers from GW Young & Sons, Flex Farm, Hawick made the trip from across the border more than worthwhile with a top price of £1440×2 returning an average of £1387. The Willeys from Chopwell followed up their success in the geld ring with a quality run of steers that peaked at £1385.

Store Sheep – With the sweepings up now coming forward as well as a vast variety of hill type hoggs buyers still keen for all classes of store sheep, Mules reached £104 from JD Bousfield, Boldron. Hill Cheviots to £80 and Swale hoggs reaching £78 from KT Anderson, Edmundbyers. However, taking the top spot today was 4 pure Dutch Spotted Tup Hoggs from JT Wilson, Burnhope.
