Store Cattle – It’s a purple patch for the vendors, the buyers are out in numbers and the trade is absolutely electric, on days like today not all bidders become buyers as demand reaches what is possibly an all time high. A fair entry of young bulls today had attracted plenty of interest and they all certainly sold very well, top of the pile with what transpired to be one of the oldest bulls in the mart at a tender 14 months was a tremendous Limousin from the aforementioned W A Wardman, Yearby at a pleasing £1185, a fine run of 22 Salers and Salers X Charolais young bulls from Allison Devereux Farms, Wolsingham caught the buyers attention as the 10/11 month olds averaged very close to £1000. The store cattle followed, astonishing scenes as all classes are ringing the bell, certainly those who sell historically in  Spring will be fast developing itchy trigger fingers, it’s hard to envisage them becoming much dearer than this. Topping the sale today was a strong 2 year old Simmental heifer from regular supporters J D & M S Mortimer, Mayland Farm at a wonderful £1375, incredibly almost 30 heifers today sold the top side of £1200. The steer trade belonged to the Aberdeen Angus of G & J H Tomlinson & Son of Sunniside Farm as their quality quartet twice reached £1350; an impossible task today to mention all those deserving, a classy 19 month old Shorthorn heifer from M J Hutchinson, Red Gap Farm impressed at £1330 whilst yearlings from I Newton & Son, Gibbet Hill (£1230 13m Limousin Heifer) and W A Wardman, Thrushwood (£1200 11m Charolais Steer) were amongst the highlights. The consistent Stones Family of Nun Cote Nook showed the pick of the weaned calves as their quintet of 9 month old’s sold 3 times beyond £1100 to a peak of £1140.

Store Hoggs – The sheep trade appears to have plenty of gas in the tank and few are concerned that it will not maintain full speed all the way to Spring, the result then is more of the same with incredible demand for all shapes and sizes. Top Texel’s today from two vendors shared the high price of £132 as S Bolton, Pea Flatts Farm and N A Thompson, Willow Brooke led the charge. A tremendous run of Cheviot hoggs from C H & M C Phalp of Great Ayton enjoyed what was possibly the trade of the day as the 76 of them levelled over £118 and there seemed to be nothing easy about buying Easycare’s as S Thompson & Son, Stillington sold a pen of 10 for an impressive £112. The seasons first look at ewes with lambs at foot saw 2 sharp Suffolk ewes with 4 lambs at their feet from A Wilson, Calf Close, Easington sell to average £78 per life.
